MIAMI -- Marlins right-hander Ismael Valdez suffered a left Achilles strain in the seventh inning on Friday night and is listed as day-to-day.

Valdez suffered the injury after fielding a comeback grounder by Colorado's Vinny Castilla in the seventh inning at Pro Player Stadium.

Castilla's grounder struck off Valdez's leg, knocking the pitcher off balance. Valdez retrieved the ball, and threw Castilla out at first.

The Rockies had Royce Clayton on third at the time.

Clearly shaken, Marlins manager Jack McKeon and trainer Sean Cunningham sprinted to the mound. Valdez didn't attempt to test the ankle and he walked gingerly off the field.

Reliever Matt Perisho entered the game and got Jeromy Burnitz to groundout to second base, ending the inning.

Valdez tossed 6 2/3 scoreless innings and the Marlins were leading, 1-0, when he departed.

The Marlins acquired Valdez from the Padres on July 31 for minor league pitcher Travis Chick.
