NEW YORK -- Randy Johnson and the Yankees have reached a tentative agreement on a two-year extension worth $32 million, ESPN The Magazine's Buster Olney reports.

The agreement is a precursor for the Big Unit to be traded from Arizona to New York. Commissioner Bud Selig has already approved the deal.

Changing His Number

A source told ESPN.com that once the Yankees finalize their trade with the Diamondbacks for Randy Johnson, they will announce that Johnson will take a different number than the No. 51 he has worn throughout his career.

Bernie Williams currently wears No. 51 for the Yankees.

The five-time Cy Young Award winner has a $16 million salary in 2005, of which $6 million is deferred at 2 percent interest.

The trade calls for the Diamondbacks to receive pitchers Javier Vazquez and Brad Halsey, catcher Dioner Navarro and $9 million.

All involved players will have to pass physicals for the trade to be finalized.

Arizona also has a preliminary agreement in place to trade Navarro and pitching prospect William Juarez to Los Angeles for outfielder Shawn Green and $8 million. That deal is contingent on the Diamondbacks and Green agreeing to an extension.

Guest Moneyball

2007! A 41 year old pitcher that has knee problem? I guess the Yankees are in a win now situation.

he went 245 innings last year.

i'd say the knee problem is nothing more than a distant memory.

Because he started injecting stuff into his knee. At some point that won't be enough and that knee will fall apart.
