2003 Marlins WS Ring Stolen

A diamond-filled replica World Series championship ring was stolen from a major league pitcher who lives in El Paso, according to a police report filed last week.

"It's the only one in El Paso," said Armando Almanza, 32, who was part of the Florida Marlins championship team of 2003. "If anybody has it, I don't know why they would want it."

The ring of white gold has a small marlin with a teal- colored diamond for an eye atop a baseball made of diamonds. The ring, which is a man's size 11, also has Almanza's last name on it and on one side has World Series, Florida Marlins vs. New York Yankees.

The ring was a $5,000 replica of the original championship ring that is worth eight times more, said Almanza, who is now with the San Francisco Giants. The original ring was safe, he said.

"It's not the big one, but it is a $5,000 ring," Almanza said, adding that he wasn't "going to point fingers" but wants the ring returned.

The case was classified as a felony theft because of the ring's worth and would be investigated as any other case, police spokesman Javier Sambrano said.

The big league left-hander hasn't seen the ring since he showed it off at a party, the police report stated. The ring turned up missing between Oct. 25 and Nov. 1 but wasn't reported stolen until last Thursday. "I figured it would be around the house," Almanza said. He decided to report the disappearance in case the ring shows up at a pawn shop.

Almanza, a native El Pasoan and a Bel Air High School graduate, was part of the Marlins championship team but didn't play in the World Series because he underwent arthroscopic surgery on his left elbow in August, which forced him to watch from the dugout.

Anyone with information on the ring may call police or Crime Stoppers at 566-8477.
