Henson retires after 41 years as coach

LAS CRUCES, NEW MEXICO (TICKER) -- Illinois is off to its best start in school history. The coach who led the Fighting Illini to their last trip to the Final Four just called it a career.

Lou Henson, the winningest coach at New Mexico State and Illinois, announced his retirement on Saturday, effective immediately.

Henson, 73, has been in a wheelchair and has faced assorted health problems, including cancer and viral encephalitis, in recent years.

"I am taking this action because it's in the best interests of New Mexico State University, our basketball program, our student-athletes, the fans, and the community," Henson said. "As a result of my health problems, my present staff and our Aggie team were forced to carry on under very trying circumstances. I want to thank them for going forward under very trying circumstances."
