Miami Completes Sweep With 10-1 Win

Recommended Posts

Coral Gables, Fla. - The Miami baseball team rode a solid start by pitcher Chris Perez and one of its most productive offensive performances of the season to 10-1 win against High Point at Mark Light Field on Sunday, Feb. 6. The win completed a series sweep of the Panthers by the Hurricanes and gave Miami its first 4-0 start since the 1994 season.

Perez, a sophomore, gave up one run in five solid innings for his first win as a Hurricane. Junior Andrew Lane, sophomore Ricky Orta and Manny Miguelez combined for six strikeouts in four scoreless innings of relief. Josh Cotten picked up the loss for High Point, going 4.1 innings and giving up six hits and four earned runs.

Miami got on the board early with a solo shot by Ryan Braun over the left field fence for his first home run of the season and a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Braun struck again with a leadoff home run in the fourth inning to left-center for a 2-0 Miami lead.

High Point cut the lead in half in the top of the fifth on an RBI single by Chris Ramirez that brought in Ro Castro from third base.

The Hurricanes broke the game open in the fifth. Brendan Katin led off the inning with an infield single and was moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Alex Garabedian. Danny Robitaille walked to put runners at first and second with one out and High Point's Rob Schlanger was brought in to relieve Cotten on the mound. Schlanger's first pitch bounced by the catcher and Katin and Robitaille advanced to second and third. Freshman Walter Diaz brought Katin home with his first career hit to spark a four-run spurt. Braun batted in his third run of the game with a sacrifice fly to deep center, followed by a two run single by Danny Valencia for a 6-1 lead at the end of the inning.

Katin added a solo home run to lead off the seventh and the Hurricanes added three more runs in the eighth for the final 10-1 score.

The Hurricanes return to action at Mark Light Field at 7 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 11 with the first of a three-game series against South Florida. Tickets, priced at $7 and $5 for youth and seniors, can be purchased online at www.hurricanesports.com or by calling 305-284-CANE in Miami-Dade County and 1-800-GO-CANES outside of Miami-Dade County.

Notes: Braun's home runs on consecutive plate appearances were the first since Jim Burt hit home runs on consecutive at-bats against Illinois-Chicago on March 20, 2004... It was Braun's second multiple-home run game, equaling his career best of two home runs against North Carolina State on June 7, 2003.
