Rodriguez: Marlins got a bargain with Urbina

CHICAGO ? Marlins fans are going to love watching Ugueth Urbina.

So says Miami product Alex Rodriguez, Urbina's former Texas Rangers teammate.

"Let me preface this by saying I hope we get Ugie back in free agency," Rodriguez said before making his seventh All-Star appearance, including six in a row as a starter. "He was an unbelievable addition. The people in Florida are really going to love this guy and the energy that he brings."

Urbina, acquired last Friday for three highly rated prospects, will only cost the Marlins about $550,000 the rest of the season. That includes their share of a deferred payment due after the season.

That's a bargain, Rodriguez said, for someone who saved 26 games in 30 tries during the first half. Rodriguez termed the Urbina addition "huge" for a team fighting for a wild-card spot.

"If he has a chance to be a difference maker, I think he will definitely do that," Rodriguez said. "You're going to be most impressed with him, with the way he works and the way he goes about his business."

The Marlins plan to use Urbina in a setup role for fellow right-hander Braden Looper, who is 30 for 33 in save chances since taking over the closer's role about a year ago.

NO JUAN

While the Marlins continue to monitor the Juan Gonzalez sweepstakes, a source close to the Rangers' slugger said they should probably cast their gaze elsewhere.

Gonzalez is unlikely to waive his blanket no-trade clause to join the Marlins or any other National League team, the source said. Kansas City is a long shot, the source said, but the Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees could have what it takes to lure him away from Texas.

Then again, Gonzalez might decide to ride out the season with the Rangers, who owe him another $6 million through the end of the year. Gonzalez becomes a free agent in November.

Of course, where Gonzalez is concerned all information is fluid. In recent weeks he has rejected a trade to the Montreal Expos and fired agent Jeff Moorad, replacing him with Fernando Cuza.

REUNION?

Despite picking up Urbina, the Marlins still appear to be in search of more bullpen help.

An industry source said they have had discussions with the New York Mets regarding right-hander David Weathers, while a Chicago radio report claimed the Marlins and Cubs had discussed a deal involving Antonio Alfonseca.

Both Weathers and Alfonseca are ex-Marlins. Weathers is still due about $4.9 million through next season, the bulk of which the Mets are believed willing to pay.

Alfonseca is still due about $1.7 million this year, but the former Marlins closer has a 6.09 ERA in 34 outings.

MIGHT HAVE BEEN

Representatives for Esteban Loaiza, the starting pitcher for the American League on Tuesday night, tried to interest the Marlins in his services just before spring training.

However, Marlins General Manager Admin Beinfest never returned a phone message.

Beinfest had plenty of company in his skepticism toward a 31-year-old pitcher with a career 4.88 ERA. Besides the Chicago White Sox, the Colorado Rockies were the only other team to offer Loaiza a contract.

Loaiza is 11-5 and a majors-leading 2.21 ERA. He will make about $1 million this year, including incentives, and the White Sox hold a team option for next year at $4 million.

Clemens in a hurry

Roger Clemens had to break the speed limit all the way from Houston to College Station, Texas, to get to Chicago in time for his final All-Star Game.

Hurricane Claudette almost prevented him from getting out of Texas. Clemens had to drive an hour and a half to College Station, where he boarded a private jet with his family and flew to Chicago. How fast did he go on the highway?

"Uhh, fast," Clemens said. "About as fast as I throw tonight, hopefully."

He pitched a 1-2-3 third inning, retiring Javy Lopez on a grounder, then striking out Jose Vidro and Edgar Renteria. It was Clemens' eighth mound appearance in an All-Star Game, matching the record held by Jim Bunning, Don Drysdale, Juan Marichal and Tom Seaver.

Information from Bloomberg News supplemented this report.

I think Juan could be had here...after all, both he and Pudge fired their agents - the same guy! And I think Pudge has been trying to get Juan to come here...something may be up. But who knows...at least we are 'gazing' in that direction.

Dave Weathers? That would be odd...seems like there are a lot of former Marlins rumored to come back - Alfonseca (yuck!), Conine...something is going to happen.

What exactly would it take to convey the fact that Juan is not coming here? Evidently the fact that he is old, is looking for a long term deal in the AL (where he can DH), has a blanket NT clause, and has had a long history of being an oft-injured whiner ins't enough..... What is? Time to accept reality.

The article said they should gaze in other directions. It all but rules out Juan - as he is wanting to stay in the American League. Doesn't sound like there is any chance of him coming here.

Weathers would be a nice addition. I'd take AA but he would have to come very cheap.

I don't like either one. Why in the world would they want Alfonseca back? He's pitched horribly this year.

Weathers is fine with me, because he isn't going to cost us much at all, and they will still pick up the salary. He would be a welcomed addition. Alfonseca, however, can go screw himself.

Weather will be a good addition but I rather see another bat.

I'm sure we could still get a bat and Weathers. David wouldn't cost anymore than 1-2 prospects, and average prospects at that.

I cant believe we didnt go after Loaiza! Well no one thought he will be this good. David Weathers is a great Relief pitch and gets alot of groundouts he would be a good Addition to the Pen. I hope we can work out a deal or somthing. I really like David everytime he pitched against us he was dominate.

We better get Juan Gon....we are still hunting for him and we got to get him before the Redsox and Yankees get him.

I still say the best deal, for all kinds of reasons, financial, leadership, production, is a Lee and (and maybe Redmond) and a prospect or two for Conine, Johnson and Ligtenberg. Somehwere in the possible combos is a terrific deal for The Fish.

But I'm just one voice crying in the wilderness.

And no I'm not trying to open up the whole Lee/Conine debate again. Heaven forbid.

:lol

15 days left for any deals!

anyone but EL PULPO, Weathers would be nice if the Mets take up most of his salary. i feel like we're on welfare, the only way we can make a trade is if the other team keeps most of the salary of the guy we're getting

I know Alfonseca has been doing bad but i would want him back. He has great stuff and nasty Sinker. Maybe he will turn back to the old Alfonseca. The Marlins want him because maybe we can work with him and Correct his Faults like they did with Clement...i would rather take Weathers but if he isnt available then i would take El Pulpo

I think the problem with the Dragon Slayer is that his injury from early in the year is still effecting him. Dusty even said in an article I read that he didn't want Alfonseca on the DL any longer because he was costing too much money to be injured. They rushed him back, and this is what happened because of it.

i never want to see Alfonseca in a Marlins uni again

HE BLOWS

And no I'm not trying to open up the whole Lee/Conine debate again. Heaven forbid

D. Lee sucks!!! :banghead Sorry, couldn't resist. :p

I wouldn't of minded seeing the 6 fingered wonder if it were three weeks ago, but I think we already went out and addressed the whole short-inning power reliever issue.

We need a LF and/or a 1B, should Lee be included in the deal. No more short relief, no trading for bats off the bench, we need to improve the sticks in the starting nine ASAFP.

yea i think our bullpen is good enough lets go after a bat so we could give our pitchers more support
