JUPITER, Fla. -- Josh Beckett cherished the attention associated with being the 2003 World Series MVP. But the Marlins right-hander was determined not to get caught up this spring in the same kind of hoopla he enjoyed a year ago.

This time last year, Beckett was the center of immense media coverage. Following the World Series, he was the subject of intense national coverage, receiving heavy exposure.

When it came time to pitch in 2004, Beckett didn't receive many breaks. He spent three stints on the disabled list and ended up 9-9 with a 3.79 ERA.

Eager to put last year behind him, Beckett is performing brilliantly this spring.

On Saturday, the hard-throwing Texan turned in a sparkling six-inning performance, giving up one unearned run on four hits with four strikeouts. He compiled 62 pitches and felt strong enough to toss another inning.

Beckett was in line for the win, taking a 2-1 lead into the ninth inning at Roger Dean Stadium. Washington, however, rallied for five runs in the inning and claimed a 6-3 win.

Continuing to be the most impressive Marlin in the spring, Beckett lowered his ERA to 0.77. In three starts, he has surrendered one earned run in 12 2/3 innings, with 14 strikeouts and four walks.

With outings like Saturday, it is hard to imagine he won't be the Marlins' Opening Day pitcher on April 5 against the Braves. Beckett and A.J. Burnett are the frontrunners to get the ball in the opener.

"I'm definitely focused this year on what I want to do and what I need to do," Beckett said. "This year wasn't going to be like that [following the World Series]. It was great exposure for me and I had a great time. I wasn't going to do that this year."

Beckett enjoyed a quiet offseason, spending a majority of his time at his ranch in southern Texas near the Mexican border. He worked out and pitched at a nearby high school, but stayed away from the spotlight.

"I would never use that as an excuse as to why certain things happened last year," he said. "I think the focus level this year is better. Coming in to Spring Training, I came in with kind of a quiet mind."

Beckett will next pitch on Wednesday, but probably not against the Mets at Roger Dean Stadium. Most likely, he will throw in some form of intrasquad scrimmage on a back field.

focused on what, compiling another 9-9 season, I dont care how he does against the spring training guys, no offense to Jorgy there, but until he plays well consistently against major leaguers... he wont even so much as raise an eyebrow from me, I still cant get over the fact that hes still a sub .500 pitcher in his career... he's still got some stuff to prove to me, and thats just me...

Amen. Abe Nunez was a stud in ST, but we all know how that ended up. At any rate, let's hope Josh pitches to at least 75% of his potential because that's probably good enough for 15+ wins 200Ks and an ERA around 3.

Acutally, he's a career .500 pitcher (26-26) so I disagree with your facts, as well as your logic.

He's posting these numbers in the first two innings (sometimes more) of any spring start where teams have at least a few regulars out there to get some P.T.; the only argument you can give is that he has a small sample size to go on (only 14 innings) not that he's doing it against sub-par talent.

The only thing that has limited Beckett has been injuries, not Beckett. How can anyone deny Beckett has not lived up to his potential in the time has pitched? A career 3.49 ERA? Nearly 3:1 career K/BB ratio? Averages nearly 9ks per 9 innings? All people can point to are wins and losses, the most arbitrary stat in all of baseball. If Beckett gets major run support last season and goes 12-6 instead, does that all of a sudden make it a good season. Can anyone find any stat besides wins and losses to show Beckett hasnt lived up to his potential? The fact that his numbers are what they are despite blisters and injuries screwing him up shows how much better his pitching is.

Yeah, living in the past is grand, but I'd rather go for a Title this year instead of reading press clippings from 2003.

:thumbup ....what i have been trying to say for so long......if Beckett stays away from injuries and has some offense to help him...the wins and everything else will fall into place, how many times did Beckett, Pavano and Burnett hold the opposing team to 4 5 or even 3 hits and still they lose the game 1 to 0 or 2 to 0
