Glad the Marlins didn't sign this guy...

Bautista, 32, dropped an unexpected blow to the team after walking into Manager Lou Piniella's office early Saturday afternoon. Citing prolonged ankle problems which have affected his knee and his back, Bautista's retirement leaves a huge hole in the Rays' outfield situation. Players the Rays are believed to be looking at to replace Bautista include Pittsburgh's Rob Mackowiak, Washington's Nick Johnson and Terrmel Sledge and Baltimore's Jay Gibbons. Tampa Bay will be looking to offer any member of its bullpen - with the possible exception of Danys Baez - and mid-level prospects. In addition, GM Chuck LaMar said he won't consider at this time bringing up prospects Delmon Young, Jonny Gomes or Joey Gathright, who were all sent to minor-league camp earlier in the week. Bautista retires as a career .272 hitter with 63 homers and 319 RBI in 895 games with the Detroit Tigers, Atlanta Braves, Florida Marlins and Arizona Diamondbacks. (Rotowire.com)

Outfielder Danny Bautista's choice to retire on Saturday shocked the Devil Rays, and the team is no looking for answers in right field and the middle of their lineup. "Everyone's kind of dumbfounded today," outfielder Aubrey Huff told the St. Petersburg Times. "We just lost our cleanup hitter and we don't know what happened...What are we going to do in rightfield?" General manager Chuck LaMar is not going to hand the job to either in-house veterans Dee Brown, Tom Goodwin and Chris Singleton or minor league options Joey Gathright, Jonny Gomes and Delmon Young. The recently-signed Alex Sanchez moved to the top of the list by default, and the newspaper also mentioned trade scenarios involving Jay Gibbons (Orioles), Wily Mo Pena (Reds), Rob Mackowiak (Pirates), Eric Byrnes (Athletics), Terrmel Sledge (Nationals), and Eric Valent (Mets). -- (Fanball.com)

What a surprise. A bummer.

Danny had a really good year last year.

I remember, years ago, I was upset we traded him.

His was, IMO, the best 4th OF in the league.

He was also a nice guy, a pro, and this "ankle" stuff seems to come out of nowhere. I followed him closely last season and this issue never came up to my knowledge.

Rays looking to add a bat now, apparently interested in Willy Mo Pena and Nick Johnson. Losing Bautista sucks, but now Gathright/Sanchez platoon CF and Carl can move back to his natural position. (LF)
