Well, I've mentioned it in the game thread the past few games, and I see no reason why it shouldn't have a topic all its own--Juan Encarnacion is patient!!

I never thought I'd see the day. I'm used to watching him swing and miss on horrible strokes, missing badly on curves and high fastballs. But he is waiting on pitches, and balls that he once flailed wrecklessly at no longer concern me! I feel much more comfortable when he is at the plate, and I truly feel like he's going to get a good look every time out.

If he can contribute in a big way at the 7th spot, I think we're in for a fun ride this season. We've never had a consistent hitter in the bottom tier of the order--and with the 1-6 that the Marlins boast, it would be huge if Ency can produce at the bottom of the lineup. I'm really excited about what he can do, and I hope that he continues to impress!

Oh, and he's actually hitting OPPO! He's always been a pull hitter, and now he's holding back and taking pitches into Right Field (the hit and run tonight is a good example). He struck out in the 8th (?) on a horrible call from the ump. The curve was well low, and Ency had an argument. I mean, he's watching balls, and that's a good thing!

Way to go Juan!

Not to offer the dissenting opinion, because I like the progress he's making, but I think you are making too much of it.

He really hasn't been all that patient. Throughout the series against the Nationals he had many at bats right out of his mediocre 1998-2004 career. Swinging at balls outside of the zone. Taking huge cuts and missing. Today and yesterday (didn't get to watch the games) according to the pitch trackers at Sportsline.com and MLB Gameday most of the balls he took were well out of the zone or inside where I remember him taking a lot last year. Seemed like it was mostly outside pitches that he chased that got him in trouble. Then again more people than normal were arguing about the ump tonight.

I don't know. He's batting .267 or whatever it is... with power... in opportune times. I'm absolutly loving the contact he's making right now. But it does seems like we're giving him too much credit for hitting home runs with the bases loaded. There's nothing special about them. They're not harder than a home run with the bases empty or a man on first. Hitters are supposed to hit better with the bases loaded. The pitcher eases up on breaking balls and throws fastballs in the strike zone.

Alot of you guys are suprised. He was hurt last year.

he was one of the worst OF in baseball 2 years ago

I think he is doing a lot better but would everyone be so high on Enc. if he didn't hit those two slams. Would it be different if he just got singles or a out and a single.

I'm really impressed with the way he has played this year but I still need a couple more weeks before I can honestly trust him, but I give him tons of credit so far.

More contact equals less strike outs, which hopefully turns into more opportunities for this team to succeed.

If Enc hits .267 this season, and gets on base more than 30% of the time, I'm cool.

Seriously, I'm not even talking about the slams. I didnt' even mention them in my original post. I'm talking about his patience at the plate and how much he has improved since years past. Ya, the home runs are nice, but like Wild Card said, it's not always about BA. If he he grounds out and advances the runner, or flies out and advances, it's better than his usual K in key situations. He's always had a wretched OBP, and I think that will change drastically this year. I'm seeing it already--and that's what I like about him right now.

for a corner outfielder, it certainly is.

i'm glad you're not picky though.

You've got to be kidding me, right? I think all the statistical analysis is frying your brain.

Malman, it's true. Look at the league-wide stats with no one on, men on and bases loaded and you'll find batters find more success with the bases loaded. In 2004 batters hit .276 w/ the bases loaded and .267 overall. Ask your coach or closest baseball profesional, they may talk about guts it takes, but they'll concede the batter has a greater chance than normally.

Again I like what the guy is doing. I can live with a .270 average, 20 HRs and moderately better patience. Hopefully he'll put it all together this year. I'm rooting for the guy, after all he's wearing a Marlins jersey, but it's too soon to praise or criticize Enc for his production this year.
