Posted April 15, 200519 yr The Brewers and Ben Sheets have reportedly agreed to a four-year deal worth about $38 million. It'll be officially announced at a press conference this evening. Sheets would get just $2 million less than Johan Santana, who was also eligible for free agency after 2006. Santana settled cheaper than he needed to, but this seems just about right for Sheets. Apr. 15 - 4:57 pm et Source: Milwaukee Journal Sentinel C/O Rotoworld Why don't we resign AJ at that price? I think that works for both sides, honestly.
April 15, 200519 yr Ben Sheets and Johan Santana, bigger namewise, took these deals. Why not offer it to him, get him to the table, and see what happens. We can't win an arms race in the offseason so why not make a little preemptive strike?
April 15, 200519 yr If we offered that to AJ, he would definitely accept it. I don't think he would wait until free agency just to get an additional 2 million, he knows that his gift is fragile and is all the more reason for him to make a deal right now.

April 15, 200519 yr Perhaps Sheets and Santana like Milwaukee and Minnesota :lol Well, atleast like their front office, coaches and teammates. I don't remember Sheets or Santana trashing the organization because they weren't allowed to start at home. I don't remember Sheets or Santana harboring bad feelings towards the owner or GM of their teams over a contract dispute from years ago. I don't remember Sheets or Santana publically expressing their wish to join an ex-teammate on a new team. You have to admit that there's more than the slight possibility that Burnett would turn down the Marlins if the money was equal.
April 16, 200519 yr no doubt in my mind he would take that i'd even try and start lower maybe 4/35 743285[/snapback] So far, Sheets > Burnett. AJ hasnt proved he deserves that money.

April 16, 200519 yr I may be wrong about this - but I think Santana and Sheets were not eligible for FA after this season. So, even though they both went to arbitration this year, they'd have to go through that process again next year. Of course, that would mean that their teams would have to at least offer arbitration, but that's a no brainer. The only similar type pitcher on our roster in that situation is Beckett...so the question emerges: Should we offer Beckett a long-term deal now - like these guys? I personally think we should, because if we wait for next year - he'll go the AJ/Pavano route. Also, he should not cost as much. I think AJ is a lost cause. He's outta here no matter how much we offer, because the Yanks/Sox will easily out bid us.
April 16, 200519 yr AJ'd take that in a heart-beat. He's a loner, he doesn't care who he plays for as long as they pay him...it's not like he has a boy hood dream of playing for the Yankees, Red Sox, Cardinals or any other big money team with pitching needs. The fact that Santana, Sheets and Hudson have all signed deals well below what I expected them to get simply puts the Marlins in the driver's seat with negotiations...

So I can very easily see him signing with the Yankees for the purpose of winning a WS, and Pavs being there trying to recruit him sure isn't going to help the Marlins' cause. If we offered him a 4/38 deal right now, he would take it, but if we offer it in the offseason I doubt he's coming back because another club would definitely offer him that or more.
April 16, 200519 yr Cant speak for Santana but the Brewers have a brand new stadium that lets them sign players to these contracts. I bet once/if this stadium deal gets finalized, the Marlins lock up Burnett long term.
April 16, 200519 yr There's a simple explanation why there has been no longterm with AJ. It's takes two willing parties to make a deal.
April 16, 200519 yr I'm sure AJ was a willing party in the past. They've had plenty of time to approach him before this point & lock him up at a decent salary. He's gone through TJ surgery & so they chose to wait. Now he's back to pre-surgery Burnett and there's no discount coming for Florida. Even if he doesn't put up career numbers it's going to be very difficult to keep him.
