May 18, 200520 yr Author c/o NBA.com NEW YORK -- Labor talks between the NBA and the players' union broke off Wednesday, increasing the chance of a lockout starting in the offseason. In a statement, the NBA accused the union of backtracking on several items that the sides had agreed upon. The collective bargaining agreement expires on June 30. "Since we are at a loss as to how we can possibly reach a new deal that is in any way consistent with the principal terms that we have been discussing for many months, there are no further meetings scheduled at this time," deputy commissioner Russ Granik said. The union did not immediately respond. If no new agreement is reached, a lockout could begin as early as July 1 -- three days after the draft.
May 18, 200520 yr On the scope of things in the sports world, this certainly isn't terrifying...the NBA for the most part is garbage and needs to do a lot to fix itself.

May 18, 200520 yr Well, a lockout happened just a few years ago, so another one wouldn't really surprise me.
May 18, 200520 yr The NBA has always had problems with CBA negotiations...and this draft age limit and salary cap situation is something that was destined to put a snag in negotiations.
May 18, 200520 yr After what the NHL has gone through I dont forsee a lockout/strike. These guys will work it out, if they dont work it out then they will be the dumbest people on Earth. Age Limit is something the owners and league will use as a major bargaining chip, it will not be implemented, the players will conceed something else, like a lower salary cap, or 4 year max deals etc.

I might be one of the only few who wish the NHL would come back and eagerly await the start of next season. The NBA is in its own little world and really needs to fix this contract stuff because it's really not fair that there are only a few teams who can get out of salary cap debt.

What they care about is that the NHL is in HUGE hole not having a season. The NBA, I hope, can realize that a work stoppage is not good for the game. They are so far ahead of the NHL in terms of market share in the US, why would they give the NHL a glimmer of hope to recover.
May 20, 200520 yr Y'know, ESPN covering only baseball and football would be pretty sweet. There'd only be a short deadspot too (Feb-March).
