Ask me this question when he goes on the DL and I would say of course he gets his job back... Right now, I dunno..

You here the name Todd Jones and you don't think he should be the closer of a team contending for a championship... but Jones has done pretty well out there. He has more heat then I thought he had (I saw 94 today?)... he has a nice tailing fastball/cut fastball combination and has a pretty good over the top curve.

He's given up a few hits here and there and scared us once or twice but he hasn't blown any saves since he got the job. He's been a closer before and he has the closer's mentality... something we're not quite sure if Guillermo has.

If Jones is doing a good job as the closer and Mota is known for being a top of the line set up guy, I say why mess with a good thing?

I wouldn't be surprised to see Mota start off as the set up guy for a few games to see how he does. And it sure doesn't hurt to have two guys with closer mentality to pitch the 8th and 9th, or switch off when they get multiple games in a row to close.

Remember those two guys on LA that had the closer mentality, anyways needless to say i think they converted like 84 times in a row, works for me. Guilermo Mota is just as much apart of Gagne's streak as Gagne. i really like him in the setup role.

I say Mota should set up Jones for as long as it works. Put Mota in the tricky spots in the 7th or 8th where he has thrived in his career and leave Jones in the 9th. Remember, closing out the 9th isn't always as tough as pitching the 7th and 8th.

The closer is Mota.

Just as Lowell is our 3B, not Dillon and Castillo is our 2B, not Easley.

If Mota fails I believe Jones will take over quickly, but Mota wants to be a closer and the Marlins want Mota to be a closer.

haha. mota should be the closer.

Actually it would hurt his value during arbitration if he didn't have all those saves. And he might be better pitching the 7th and 8th like he did in LA. I don't like exclusive use of your ace reliever only in the 9th with a lead anyway.

Since Jones has been performing well in the closer position, and since Mota has a lot more experience as a reliever, my guess, and I wouldn't be suprised to see Mota come back and be a reliever.

The reason why Jeff has more HR's is because he has had a lot more opportunities.

Just like Jones has a lot more saves than Mota because he has had a lot more opportunities.

Well, if you extrapolate Cabrera's HRs to 5,921 ABs you get 296 HRs. So who would you rather have at the plate down 3 runs, 2 outs bottom of the 9th with bases loaded?

Jones has saved 77% of his opportunities. Mota 39%.

That is a flawed statistic, PBMarlin. Up until this year, Mota has only been given opportunities to blow saves (leads), not save them.

Edit: Once you add holds, which are 'saves' for middle relievers, Mota gains the upper hand. 74 of 85, or 87% to Jones' 292 of 348, 84%

Who?............TODD JONES!
