July 30, 200321 yr J.D DREW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! or Bust !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
July 30, 200321 yr i'll go on record saying i like drew and i think he's got talent. i'd like him for the future since he'd replace some lost offense from lee and/or luis leaving. however that injury history isn't something you can just shrug off. depending on what prospects we'd send Pittsburgh, I'd probaly be in favor of the deal.
July 30, 200321 yr Im definitely on the side of getting Drew, because we dont hit very well at all against righties compared to against lefties because of our lack of a power lefty. Drew is the entire package, despite the fact that hes injury prone. I dont want him because hes good with RISP, but because he hits for power, is a lefty, and plays awesome defense.

Im with you...I could stand to lose Wayne, Levinski, and Wilson...but not a hutch, bautista, stokes, hermida.
July 30, 200321 yr i dont think any of our big name prospects would be involved in this deal, remember, its like trading for suppan, not for drew, i think suppan would demand less talent than drew, and the pirates have been seeming to give up a lot for a little recently.......lets see if this stay true, cause if we just send um wayne, neal and wilson, thats a steal for us
July 30, 200321 yr Geee... I need to check this board more often... this is quite a long thread on my boy JD. Anyway, I'm not sure how serious the "Drew to Florida" rumor is. The whole idea was basically laughed off here in St. Louis. I can't imagine Jocketty trading Drew for Suppan. Jocketty isn't known for making stupid trades like that. I'm not sure if Drew will be traded (I seriously doubt he will), but it will take more than JUST Suppan to get him. Nothing against Suppan, but it will take more to get Drew.

July 30, 200321 yr i think suppan would demand less talent than drew I agree, and that's why this trade won't happen. Drew has more trade value than just Suppan alone.

July 30, 200321 yr Like I said, we would probably end up sending a few prospects to the Pirates and 1 or 2 to St. Louis as well... Wild, That could make the deal go through. I just can't see the deal working without the Cards getting something more than Suppan. Whether it be a Major League OF or prospects.
July 30, 200321 yr Just to let everyone know, this deal is still going down... Drew trade still in the works By Mike Berardino Staff writer Posted July 30 2003 The St. Louis Cardinals are desperate for pitching. The Marlins are hot for Cardinals outfielder J.D. Drew. Whether the two teams wind up making a deal before Thursday's non-waiver trade deadline could depend on how desperate the Cardinals get. A major league source confirmed Tuesday night the Marlins, Cardinals and Pittsburgh Pirates continue to discuss a three-way deal that would send Drew to South Florida and streaking right-hander Jeff Suppan to St. Louis in exchange for a package of Marlins prospects. Sources said the Cardinals also have interest in Marlins Triple-A right-hander Justin Wayne, a former first-round pick who has struggled in limited exposure to the majors. The Pirates are focused on Marlins' Double-A shortstop Josh Wilson, a Pittsburgh-area product. It's possible the Marlins will have to find a way to funnel a second big-league arm to St. Louis to balance the deal. Drew, 27, is due about $1.25 million the rest of the season and eligible for salary arbitration next winter. Suppan is due no more than $450,000 the rest of the year, and that's if he reaches all of his incentives. "I would be surprised if St. Louis gave up J.D. Drew for Suppan," one general manager said. "I think people like Drew, but I don't know how gettable he is. St. Louis has been really adamant about keeping him." Drew has been playing center field for the Cardinals in place of Jim Edmonds, who has been bothered since the All-Star break by an inflamed right rotator cuff. The Cardinals are reluctant to part with Drew when they also could lose Edmonds to the disabled list. Staff ace Matt Morris could miss the rest of the season with a broken bone in his pitching hand, although Morris maintains he'll be back next month. "I think they have to trade Drew," one National League personnel man said. "They need pitching bad, and they don't have anything in their farm system. The only thing of value that other people would want is Drew." Drew, a former Florida State All-American, has been on the disabled list five times, including earlier this year. He has patellar tendinitis in his right knee, the same condition that forced Mark McGwire into retirement, and Drew has a hard time playing on artificial turf or in a long string of games. While the San Diego Padres, Seattle Mariners and Oakland A's also have interest in Drew, some scouts are wary of his availability. "That's the red flag for me," one personnel man said. "If they're going to trade him, they obviously know something about the knee we don't know." The Marlins continue to view San Diego's slumping Rondell White as a viable fallback option. White is due about $1.7 million the rest of the season, but the Marlins want the Padres to pay all but $400,000 of that amount, sources said. White was hitting just .186 in July and had gone 60 at-bats without a home run before hitting his 17th Tuesday in Pittsburgh. Meanwhile, the New York Yankees shipped outfielder Raul Mondesi to Arizona. While some reports had the Marlins after Mondesi, a major league source said they were too wary of his attitude to acquire him. The Yankees and Marlins talked about a deal that would have sent Triple-A right-hander Vladimir Nunez to the Bronx. But New York got right-handed pitcher Bret Prinz in the Mondesi deal and might not be interested in Nunez. Rookie left fielder Miguel Cabrera went 1 for 4 in Tuesday's 2-1 win over Arizona. He is hitting .269 with six home runs and 25 RBI.
July 30, 200321 yr Sources said the Cardinals also have interest in Marlins Triple-A right-hander Justin Wayne, a former first-round pick who has struggled in limited exposure to the majors. Wild, Thanks for the story, I hadn't seen that one yet. I'll have to post that over at our forum (not that we need another Drew trade article). What do you guys know about Wayne? Is he any good?
July 30, 200321 yr "That's the red flag for me," one personnel man said. "If they're going to trade him, they obviously know something about the knee we don't know." :mischief2
July 30, 200321 yr doesn't sound too promising. :unsure : He's looked OK here in AAA, but every call up has been horrible. Still needs some grooming for sure but he may still work out.
July 30, 200321 yr DREW OR BUST!!! Wow isn't it great hoping for organization to add talent not to subtract mlb talent for prospect? :w00t
July 30, 200321 yr "That's the red flag for me," one personnel man said. "If they're going to trade him, they obviously know something about the knee we don't know." JD's knee and his entire body is made of glass. The boy is very fragile.
July 30, 200321 yr Could we include Hollandsworth in the deal? We could ship his lefty bat and remaining contract on to St. Louis. He might actually be a good fit coming off the bench in St. Louis. I'm probably dreaming, but...

I'm probably dreaming, but... I would like to keep Hollandworth. In the playoffs, you're gonna need depth. That's what he gives us.
July 30, 200321 yr I just want to bring up one reason why we need Drew, good right handed pitching torches us. Do I have to remind everyone of what Kerry Wood did to us.

July 30, 200321 yr wow the Cards are gonna give Drew for Jeff freakin Suppan? I don't think this rumor is all that legit. Drew can fetch more IMO...
July 30, 200321 yr It's possible the Marlins will have to find a way to funnel a second big-league arm to St. Louis to balance the deal. This is what intrigues me. Would the Marlins trade another "big league arm" or would this turn into some kind of 4 way deal.
July 30, 200321 yr doesn't sound too promising. :unsure : He was rushed up IMO because hes Loria's pet project. Another full season in the minors and he will be a very solid #4 starter.
