Marlins sign their three first-round draft picks

The three new millionaires were wide-eyed. They toured the Florida Marlins' clubhouse for the first time, donned crisp major-league jerseys with their names stitched across the back and walked on the team's home diamond.

 

Now, the trick for the Marlins' first-round draft picks - high school pitchers Chris Volstad and Aaron Thompson, plus college pitcher Jacob Marceaux - will be finding their way back to big-league surroundings.

 

"We talked about that when we were down on the field," said Volstad, a 6-foot-7 product of Palm Beach Gardens High, about an hour north of the Marlins' home stadium. "Hopefully in a couple years, we'll be down here together in the starting rotation for the big-league team."

 

The trio signed their contracts with the club in Miami on Thursday and begin their pro careers Friday, when Volstad and Thompson report to the team's Gulf Coast League affiliate in nearby Jupiter and Marceaux heads for Jamestown, N.Y. and the Marlins' team in the New York-Penn League.

 

Volstad, the No. 16 overall pick, received a $1.6 million signing bonus. Thompson, who was taken six slots later, got about $1.4 million and Marceaux, the 29th overall selection, got about $1.1 million in bonus money.

 

"It's not just every day that you throw around this type of dollars to an individual," Marlins president David Samson said. "It has to matter. It has to be meaningful to the family, it has to be meaningful to the athlete and it has to be meaningful to the people in the baseball department. And we're incredibly happy."

 

Volstad was 8-3 with a 0.79 ERA, 107 strikeouts and 12 walks in his senior season. Thompson had nearly identical numbers; 8-3, 0.84 ERA this spring at Houston Second Baptist High. Marceaux was 6-5 with a 3.05 ERA for McNeese State in 2005, striking out 105 batters in 100 1-3 innings.

 

"Adding pitching to your organization is paramount to success," said Jim Fleming, the Marlins' vice president of player development and scouting. "It all starts with pitching."

 

Playing in Jupiter won't be much of a change for Volstad; the Marlins' facility there is about five minutes from his home. Thompson, however, won't have that luxury - but is looking forward to getting started.

 

"I'm ready to go out and compete," Thompson said. "I feel like I can compete at any level. Whatever the challenge, I've tried to always rise up. And I look forward to the challenges that'll come my way."

 

Marceaux, a native of Jennings, La., said the Marlins' track record of harvesting homegrown talent piqued his interest.

 

Three current members of Florida's rotation - Josh Beckett, A.J. Burnett and Dontrelle Willis - are all products of the team's farm system.

 

"Those guys came up through the system rather quick, and that was definitely very intriguing to me about the Florida Marlins," Marceaux said. "I can't wait to get out there and start working with these guys."

"First contract season: $850/month maximum. After that, open to negotiation

 

Alien Salary Rates: Different for aliens on visas--mandated by INS (Immigration).

 

Triple-A--First year: $2,150/month, after first year no less than $2,150/month

 

Class AA-First year: $1,500/month, after first year no less than $1,500/month

 

Class A (full season)--First year: $1,050/month, after first year no

less than $850/month

 

Dominican & Venezuelan Summer Leagues--no lower than $300/month

Those pay levels. Wow. Didn't realize they were that low. I guess when your a baseball player you figure your young and will save up all your earnings just in case. Wow $300 per month. That is chump change. as are all the others. No wonder they want to make the most money at the Majors.
