Posted July 1, 200519 yr I wonder if they'd also be willing to deal Hideki Matsui. Of their starters, only Sheff/Posada/Matsui don't have no trade clauses. If they are serious about not dealing prospects and still want to trade for help, they'd have to deal Matsui. Posada is too valuable, and I don't see anyone wanting Sheffield if they think he'll tank games like he did with the Brewers. Matsui is a FA, so they could always resign him this summer. Enc/prospect(s) for Matsui/cash difference between salaries. They could play Bernie/Seirra/young guys (forgot the names of the guy that had playing when Matsui was hurt) in LF. Enc would be a huge improvement in CF and they'd get a prospect or two from us to help improve their farm system. I think it would be a win/win for each team. Matsui would definitely be an upgrade for us in RF and could provide protection in the 5th hole. Pierre (L) Castillo (S) Delgado (L) Cabrera ® Matsui (L) Lo Duca ® Lowell ® Gonzo ® That would be the most balanced bad line up we've ever had. Plus, it would fix our offense problems and allow us to keep AJ. I know the Yankees love Matsui, but they really don't have another choice unless they want to get an extremely overrated player like Preston Wilson or trade a lot of prospects for Kotsay. :thumbup
July 1, 200519 yr I would love to have either Sheff or Matsui on this team to help the offense, but I doubt they are gonna give up either of those guys for Juan and Prospects. They may want to get Aj instead.
July 1, 200519 yr Didn't you hear what Sheffield said? He said he only wants to play for the Yankees and if he gets traded to any other team, they will have an unhappy player and nobody wants an unhappy player. I don't want him on the Marlins if he is just going to be a baby about it. He won't play his hardest and he won't appreciate the team. Forget him.
July 1, 200519 yr He was responding to rumors he would be traded to the Mets. You can't blame him for not wanting to go the Mets. They'd have to talk to him first to see how he feels about coming to Florida.

Though it could have just been his way of avoiding the Mets without pinpointing them. He definitely would have looked really bad if he had flat out said "I will not be happy playing for the Mets and they don't want a happy player." Hmmm... Well let's find out how he would feel about being a fish again.
July 1, 200519 yr I dunno if Sheff is going to feel unhappy i don't think its healthy to have him on the team.
July 1, 200519 yr Yanks will *NEVER* give up Matsui, he makes Steinbrenner their entire payroll in Cash over in Japan. He's the Yankees cash cow, no WAY he gets traded.
July 1, 200519 yr he is a free agent after this year, how does this benefit us? at least sheff you would of had 2 years then.

Yes the Mets were the latest rumor but I'm pretty sure he meant that to mean any team at all.
July 1, 200519 yr I already blogged about the AJ/Enc for Sheff possibility - right before anyone else did. I think that trading AJ and Enc for Sheff makes some sense. Why? AJ isnt going to re-sign with us - that is pretty clear. He has hated being with this organization for some time and who knows how much he has tried to undercut this organization from within. Enc is gone after this season and with Hermida and Willy, why would we want him back, anyway? Are you going to get more for AJ and Enc than Sheffield? Possibly. Maybe in prospects that will take several years to develop. Maybe in some moderate bullpen help and spot starter here or there. But as far as I can see - if the Yanks are willing to pay Sheff's salary and trade for a CF (and in our case, a bona fide starter) in the process, I say do it. Sheff for two years for nothing? We are losing AJ and Enc anyway. And we have more than enough talent to round out the rotation and with Sheff being added to the offense, we can score enough runs to make up for AJ's loss. Hell, we won the World Series without AJ. We can do it again.
July 1, 200519 yr Hell, we won the World Series without AJ. We can do it again. 835127[/snapback] I was about to disagree with you until you said this. A lot of people mention that we won't have AJ after this year, but the argument for keeping him this season would be because he contributes a lot NOW. But when I read this, I realized it may be true. We probably could still win it all without him. What if... Scott Olsen takes his place and does really well? That way we have roughly the same strength in our pitching rotation with a more powerful offense to back it up... It could work. We might be able to squeeze out some more wins.

If the Marlins cant score runs, it doesnt even matter. Just look at Moehler and how tough he has pitched this year. He has got to be one of the unluckiest pitchers in all of baseball. He had a mid 2 something ERA and was like 2-6. C'mon. Sheff in here makes this team score at least 3 runs by just showing up. Look at the Cards - you cant tell me they have a staff of studs. They have a couple of solid guys and two good starters in Morris and Carpenter - but it is that offense that runs that team. Same with the Red Sux last year. In '03 when we had a baby offense, we needed great pitching to help put us in a position to win. Right now, we have a very potent offense (that isnt clicking quite yet) and a very good pitching staff. Sheff makes this team scary - very scary. Even Leiter could win 10 games.
