Hokkaido baseball club concludes tie-up with Major League club

CHITOSE, Hokkaido -- A newly established amateur baseball club here has concluded a tie-up with Florida Marlins, a Major League club, officials said.

CBC Hokkaido, based in Chitose, has become Japan's first amateur baseball club to tie up with a Major League club.

It will change its name to Hokkaido Marlins prior to the upcoming championship. Former Nippon Ham Fighters player Tetsuro Hirose is set to assume the position as general manager while singer Chiharu Matsuyama will serve as an adviser to the team.

"I would like to use the baseball club to cheer up the people of Hokkaido," Hirose told reporters at a recent news conference.

CBC Hokkaido, comprising mainly graduates of the Komadai Tomakomai High School baseball club, will dispatch its leading players to participate in Marlins' camp with a hope to train some of them to be major leaguers. (Mainichi)
