SAPPORO (Kyodo) A baseball club in Hokkaido has joined hands with the Florida Marlins for the first tie-up agreement between a Japanese amateur team and a major league organization. Chitose Baseball Club Hokkaido announced the deal with the Marlins on Thursday, under which it will form a new team called the Hokkaido Marlins and take part in a minor-league training camp of the Marlins organization. Tetsuro Hirose, a former Nippon Ham Fighters player, has been named manager of the Hokkaido Marlins, who are scheduled to hold a player tryout in August prior to participation in a regional amateur league. CBC Hokkaido, based in Chitose, has become Japan's first amateur baseball club to tie up with a Major League club. It will change its name to Hokkaido Marlins prior to the upcoming championship. Former Nippon Ham Fighters player Tetsuro Hirose is set to assume the position as general manager while singer Chiharu Matsuyama will serve as an adviser to the team. "I would like to use the baseball club to cheer up the people of Hokkaido," Hirose told reporters at a recent news conference. CBC Hokkaido, comprising mainly graduates of the Komadai Tomakomai High School baseball club, will dispatch its leading players to participate in Marlins' camp with a hope to train some of them to be major leaguers.
