uly 08, 2005 - Paramount Pictures has announced that Oscar winners Oliver Stone and Nicolas Cage are teaming up to make a film about the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. The untitled project will focus on the rescue of Port Authority police officers Will Jimeno and John McLoughlin from the ruins of the World Trade Center.

Stone will direct the film, his first effort behind the camera since helming last year's Alexander, and Cage will play McLoughlin. Andrea Berloff penned the screenplay. Michael Shamberg, Stacey Sher and Moritz Borman will produce.

Jimeno and McLoughlin had rushed into the smoldering Twin Towers to help save victims, only to end up trapped under the rubble when the skyscrapers collapsed. Miraculously, they survived, thanks in part to rescuers who reached them before their air supply was exhausted. They were the last two survivors discovered at Ground Zero. Paramount says the film also focuses on their rescuers and their families, who are attempting to find out what happened to the trapped men. The film is a portrayal of how the human spirit rose above the tragic events of that day.

Oliver Stone said in a statement, "Andrea Berloff's screenplay is one of the best that's ever come to me out of the blue ? I guess like that day. It walloped me ? and many others ? with its emotion and simplicity. Clearly, it's a work of collective passion, a serious meditation on what happened, and carries within a compassion that heals. It's an exploration of heroism in our country ? but is international at the same time in its humanity."

McLoughlin said, "It needs to be told how this horrific tragedy brought Americans and the world together to help those in need. The people involved in putting this movie together are truly making an extraordinary attempt to tell those stories and the stories of those who are no longer with us."

"This film is also a testament to the good that we as human beings are capable of. I have all the confidence in the world that with such a great script that was written by Andrea Berloff and having one of the world's greatest directors, Oliver Stone, who has served his country and knows the price of freedom, this film will be one that will live on for generations to come, not only in America but the world," said Jimeno.

Variety says the film is on the fast-track, with pre-production already underway in New York.

I don't know about anyone else, but doesn't this seem a little too soon for a movie that has anything to do with 9/11 to be made? Especially when you consider the terrorist bombings in London and the 'inevitability' that it will happen here again, doesn't it seem like Hollywood should wait a good 20 or 30 years before they even touch this subject? Maybe its just me, but I believe they should wait. Of course money talks and everything else walks...

Nick Cage?? Come on.. if you're going to do something like this, you better use someone like Robert De Niro or Tom Hanks.. someone on their level.

I agree.. this is too early. A lot of people cant even watch Black Hawk Down yet. I don't know tho.

im sure stone will find a way to include one of the conspiracy theories in the movie, hence "bush planned it" or the "jews planned it" etc or some combination.

I don't know when the first movie dealing with Pearl Harbor was, but I know Tora Tora Tora came out almost 30 years after the actual event. Its really sad that Hollywood needs a subject such as this, not even 4 years removed, to make a profit. :thumbdown

You guys are reading too much into it. It's telling a heroic story. I think it's 1,000,000x more honorable than the fear-mongering crap the news shows on a daily basis. What's the difference between some jackass on CNN or Fox News showing the towers collapse to rally support for a war in Iraq? It's way less tasteful, IMO.

Also, I guarantee a big chunk of the revenues will be donated to a fund for the families of the victims of the attacks.

I dont like it. The imagery that this movie can create is horrific. Are they gonna show the towers falling? Are they gonna show the towers get hit? Are they gonna recreate it or use stock footage? I dont think I could stomach a movie about 9/11 just yet. Especially when Stone is doing the movie, is he gonna politicize it? If I were to watch the movie I think I would be angered, hell Im angered everytime I see the attacks on TV and this is 4 years later. Im talking blood boiling angered. This is too soon. Like Passion said leave it up to Hollywood to cash in on this horrific event in US history. :mad :thumbdown

Excerpts from script:

Cheney: Are the plans in place my young apprentice?

Bush: Yes, my Lord.

I'm 95% sure this movie will show all the Republicans planned this.

Exactly, because all liberals are hateful and know for a fact that Bush planned these attacks. Liberals also believe that Soviet Russia wasn't so bad and that Cuba is just awesome!

Stone is a fine filmmaker, but would not be the best choice for this sort of project. In fact, I don't think there is one filmmaker in Hollywood that could do this subject justice.

Stephen Spielberg.

Not to be insensitive or anything, but didn't most of the 9/11 families get like $5 million dollars each? If any money is going to be donated from this movie, donate it to families of soldiers who can't even make ends meat.

Oh, let's not forget less than a year ago Stone verbally bashed Americans as idiots who didn't have the mental capacity to understand how great "Alexander" was.

Now he wants to do a movie about our tragedy?

You make it sound like he's from another country, Stone was born and raised in New York and he served in Vietnam.

Yeah, Alexander was boring and didn't do well. However Stone has done some really good movies. Platoon is one of the best war movies ever. JFK, while filled with inacuracies and false truthes, was still a great film. And Born on the Fourth of July is one of my favorite movies.

However, to make a 9/11 film? I dunno. I think a better director would be maybe Tony Scott. His directing has a "real" and "gritty" look. He did a wonderful job in Man On Fire and Enemy of the State.
