Rolen withdraws from ASG; replaced by Ensberg

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) -- St. Louis Cardinals third baseman Scott Rolen pulled out of Tuesday's All Star game to rest a problematic right shoulder and was replaced on the National League roster by Houston's Morgan Enberg.

``I came to the ballpark with my bags packed for Detroit,'' Rolen said following the Cardinals' 4-3 victory over the San Francisco Giants on Sunday. ``I talked with the medical staff and they said it was best to rest it for four days.''

Rolen, who was elected to the starting lineup by fan voting, was 1-for-10 with an RBI in the three-game series against the Giants.

``We finally persuaded Rolen to take the game off,'' St. Louis manager Tony La Russa said. ``It gives him a chance to rest his shoulder.''

The Cardinals will still have five representatives in Detroit, including shortstop David Eckstein and outfielder Jim Edmonds in the starting lineup. Albert Pujols, who could be the NL's starting designated hitter, and pitchers Chris Carpenter and Jason Isringhausen were also selected.

``I see being voted in as an honor and a sign of respect,'' Rolen said. ``Me not going hopefully will not be taken as a sign of disrespect.''

Rolen hit .251 with five homers and 25 RBIs in 50 games in the first half. Ensberg is hitting .290 with 24 homers and 65 RBIs.

SAN FRANCISCO -- Scott Rolen had his bags packed to spend a couple of days in Detroit as a member of the National League All-Star team, but after Sunday's 4-3 win over the Giants, the St. Louis Cardinals third baseman announced he was withdrawing from the Midsummer Classic to protect his troubled left shoulder.

"I see getting voted in as a sign of honor and respect," said Rolen, who was the fans' choice despite missing the last three weeks of May and the first two-plus weeks of June after undergoing arthroscopic surgery to repair a labral tear.

"Me not going at this point I certainly hope is not taken as a sign of disrespect to the fans or to Major League Baseball," Rolen said.

Cardinals manager Tony La Russa, who will be moonlighting this week as the NL manager for the All-Star Game, said he and his medical staff had been talking to Rolen for 10 days or so, trying to get him not to risk further injury by playing in Detroit.

"For a week and a half, the trainers, the doctors and I wanted him to rest it," La Russa said. "We wanted him to take the four days off, and finally we talked to the league and he's going to be replaced."

He'll be replaced by Houston third baseman Morgan Ensberg, who leads all NL third basemen with 24 homers and 65 RBIs and is in the top 10 in average with a .290 mark.

To me I'd rather have Rolen get in better shape and be ready to go in the 2nd half. Rolen should never have been voted in the ASG as much as I love him. He's Rolen though and that's why he was.. Who can blame the fans for that? Not many fans know about Ensberg.. He deserved it more than Rolen easily this year and nobody can question that to me.

I'm sure the person Scott is, is sitting back and saying something about Morgan deserving it more and he's not worried about the ASG this year.

Scott will be in plenty more ASG's.. Who know's about Morgan.. This could be his only year.. Ya never know.

So yes, I love this move.. For Rolen and most of all the person that deserved to be there, Ensberg!
