I'm sure I've got boxes of Fleer cards from the 80s packed away somewhere.....

story

Ah well, kids haven't collected baseball cards for a while now. Plus Fleer was bought out by Rite Aid & went to pot.

Sports Cards in general have priced the young generation out of the hobby....I know money was the no. 1 reason I stopped collecting...

ah man thats actually sad to hear. i spent my childhood collecting cards, in fact i still got all my cards on the top part of my closet.

Nowadays, most people only care about auto cards and game used cards, nothing else.

I remember buying Fleer cards for 15? a pack from 1981 to 1983, then passing them on to my little brother, who I believe still has a few of them in his possession.

The news is kind of sad because of the nostalgia attached; but that's business for ya.

What was that spin off Fleer had back in the 90's that was their answer to Upper Deck?

Fleer Ultra?

Fleer Ultra?

That too but I seem to remember a card brand that sounded like Infinity or something to that effect.

cards used to be collected for the fun of it all.

then somewhere they became all about the money and priced the everyday youngster out of the business.

it happened somewhere in the mid 90s...cant recall what was the catalyst for this though.

are you talking about flair?

I was into it when I was five and six and would always bring my boxes of cards to my daycare to trade. We cared nothing about value, just getting the players we wanted.

Then packs starting costing an arm and a leg. One day, a kid brought in a price guide and trading became about how much the cards were worth.

I stopped collecting after that.

It was all about the "insert cards". Then they came out with those ultra-glossy card packs that came with like 6 cards in a pack for $5. Game over.

I remember collecting cards...I was always so excited to see if I could get one or two cards I really wanted. I would just buy pack after pack...it just got too expensive and I stopped caring.

I still collect cards, but not as often as when I was younger. I don't think the kids are that interested in it anymore. Plus, the prices have gone way up while the number of cards in the packs have gone down. I figure I can sell all mine to pay for my college education :)

I think I liked Ultra better than regular Fleer.....but they were probably my third favorite kind of card behind Topps and UD.

I have some full sets of fleer from the '80s. I wonder if they will ever be worth something. I also think it is sad that baeball card collecting is no longer popular. I used to love going to card shows as a kid with my Dad and brothers. I think cards just got to be too fancy looking and you'd be paying like $4 for 8 shiny cards. I like the regular sets like the plain old Topps or Donruss. I should start buying cards again...

I still collect but I don't buy packs anymore. I like knowing that I am going to get somebody I want for sure.

Just bought myself a signed Lebron rookie card for $12....

yaaaay

This is actually old news...they filed for bankrupcy nearly two months ago.

I really doubt that any 1980's card sets will ever be worth anything in the future, because they were very overproduced. That's why rookie cards of guys like Bonds, Clemens, etc. aren't worth that much.

I remember playing baseball and getting a pack of cards after each game. And the old stick of bubble gum in them. Some kids ate it, it was truly disgusting to see them do it. I still have all of my cards. Vintage cards are the best, though IMHO.

if that's the case, then you should check out ETopps...they never go into packs, they just sell a different set of players every week...right now they are selling classic baseball/ classic baseball events, this week they have Bucky Dent's homer, Joe Carter's homer, Barry Bonds 73 homers in 2001, and Denny McClaine's 30 win season, Mark Fydrich, as well as a Bobby Abreu winning the HR derby and Miguel Tejada AS MVP

I've shifted away from buying boxes of wax and been collecting Etopps cards instead
