What I mean is, where did the word originate? Someone today said "Luck is an Irish word originally used for the act of having sexual intercourse. " Is this true?

The word luck was borrowed from Middle Dutch or Low German; it is cognate with forms in several other Germanic languages. It seems to have been first popularized as a gambling term, not surprisingly. The ultimate origin is uncertain.

Etymology from dictionary.com: [Middle English lucke, from Middle Dutch luc, short for gheluc.]
