If A.J. Burnett ends up in a Blue Jays uniform it will require a two-step process.

People within the industry said the Florida Marlins are seeking left-hander Gustavo Chacin, outfielder Gabe Gross and reliever Brandon League for the hard-throwing right-hander.

Agreeing to that demand would be step No. 1.

The Blue Jays would then have a 72-hour window to sign Burnett to a multi-year contract. That's step No. 2.

Burnett is eligible for free agency following this season.

Manager J.P. Ricciardi has recently said he is interested in obtaining a starting pitcher, provided the player is available to the Jays beyond the 2005 season.

Ricciardi has no interest in trading for a player who is not part of his long-term plans.

Before last night, Burnett, 28, was 5-5 in 17 starts with a 3.33 ERA. He had walked 40 and struck out 111 in 113 2/3 innings.

AVERAGE

Burnett was 7-7 with a 3.68 earned run average in 2004 for the Marlins. In 18 starts he walked 38 and struck out 113.

Chacin, a rookie left-hander, has been a steady performer for the Jays this season.

In 18 starts he is 7-5 with a 3.57 ERA and is scheduled to make tonight's start against the Devil Rays.

Gross, a No. 1 pick by the Jays in 2001, has had three stints with the Jays this season. In 18 games, 38 at-bats, Gross, who was optioned back to triple-A Syracuse last week, was hitting .237 with no homers and no RBIs.

In 54 games with Syracuse, Gross is hitting .275 with three homers and 26 RBIs.

League, meanwhile, is the hardest thrower in the Jays organization.

Last year he topped out at 100 m.p.h. at double-A New Hampshire.

Now in his second stint with the Jays this season, League is 0-0 with a 7.94 ERA in six appearances.

With Syracuse, League, projected to be a closer, was 4-4 with a 5.71 ERA.
