Iowa
This post is purely for money issues prior to the 2006 season Let me try and get this money thing right, IF WE DO THIS TRADE: *signed through next year We add: +2.5 mil for Kline* +2.5 mil for Julio* +0.5 Bigbie/Penn* Total = $5.5 mil We lose: -7.5 mil for Lowell* -3.5 mil for Burnett Total = $11.0 mil So we shed $5.5 million... ok That would take our 2005 payroll to $54.5 mil, roughly. $54.5 million, next year: Add: +12.0 mil for Delgado Lose: -4.5 mil for Enc -3.0 mil for Niner -1.0 mil for Mecir -3.5 mil for Gonzalez -1.5 mil for Valdez -1.0 for Jones -1.0 for Rielding (?) Total = $16.5 mil So Take away $4.5 mil Our guaranteed payroll after the 2005 season would be $50 million (correct me if I'm wrong)... I'm sure there is arby added on too that and missing something, so give or take. C - LoDuca 1B - Delgado 2B - Castillo SS - ? 3B - Cabrera LF - ?/Bigbie CF - Pierre RF - Hermida SP - Beckett SP - Willis SP - Olsen SP - Vargas (?) SP - Penn (?) SP - Moehler (?) BP - Julio, Mota, Kline, Messenger, Resop, Alf (?), Spooney So... a payroll of $50 million QUESTIONS 1. Would we make a play on a SP or would we be comfortable with a rotation of 1. Willis (L), 2. Beckett, 3. Olsen (L), 4. Penn, 5. Vargas (L) 2. We'd still need power. Would Bigbie be our everyday LF next year and would we make a play for a SS (Nomar)? 3. Would we re-sign Gonzalez and make an offer for a good OF (Cliff Floyd, Trot Nixon, Jose Guillen, Sheffield.. or Mora at 3B/Cabs back in LF)? 4. Would we go with Bigbie in LF, Hermida in RF and Gonzalez at SS to start the season for a lineup of: 1. Pierre (L) 2. Castillo (S) 3. Delgado (L) 4. Cabrera 5. Hermida (L) 6. LoDuca 7. Bigbie (L) 8. Gonzalez ? Thoughts? Please no "KEEP ENC" or "DONT TRADE MIKEY" please. And correct me if I'm wrong on anything so I can change it. Thanks

Gonzalez 858304[/snapback] Not going to haggle the money, so here's what I've got: 1) Who would me make a play on? Kenny Rogers and Kevin Brown ar names that could be signed to one or two year deals (but remember, Boras represents both of those guys). There is no need for this team to pay for youth, we've got enough of it as it is. Perhaps Morris or Schmidt become available, but both of those guys would eat up all the money we'd have to play with. So, I say no splash with a F.A. pitcher if we concede AJ to be unsignable 2) I'm intrigued by the possibility of getting Nomar simply because of the offensive woes he may alleviate, but his health is just too flaky for us to give him the money he'd ask for. I doubt that he takes another one year deal, he'll take less money annually for long term security...and that's not in our best interests. Bigbie likely would stay in the outfield (although you could make the case, like Mav did, that Willingham would be the better option). 3) Gonzalez is welcome back, but not for Rollins money or anything near that, so I guess it depends if he wants to be greedy or not. His ties to Cabrera and Castillo may make him want to stay, but he is not worth getting into a bidding war over. Sheffield and Floyd aren't free agents: here's the List. If Giles becomes available, do it, but I doubt the Padres let it happen.

I was getting the total salaries from this year from the USA Today salary database, which I don't think takes into account Pudge/Hampton

Guest Juanky
Add: +12.0 mil for Delgado Not sure how you did the math, but if you're taking this year's salaries and then just accounting for the differences at different positions, you should only at 8 for Carlos 12 next year - 4 this year = 8 mil net difference If I'm wrong, sorry. And I personally think Alex resigns here, especially if he gets to play in the middle of Cabs and Luiy.
Das Texan
great old school thread. If we trade away Lowell and Lowell, we will be players on the free agent market this winter. Somewhere we would need a bat, as I'm not really ready to turn over hte 5 spot in the lineup to Hermidia, I would much rather have him down in the 7 spot. The best thing about Hermidia is that he can play all over the OF which is a good thing when it comes to flexibility. Please no to Millar and Floyd. Not only are they stop gaps but they are players on the decline or injury prone. I really wouldnt mind picking up a veteran somewhere that has put up good numbers historically as a sort of a filler between now and then, although we do need to find another big OF bat somewhere in the future, perhaps trade one of our numerous young arms for a bat. And I dont want Dunn. regarding sea bass, i think he has finally 'grown up' at the plate, at least he he is definitely showing that this year. Bigbie is a good 4th outfielder to have on your team. I still fully expect us to trade Willingham sometime before next year to an AL team so he can play his best position. while we are trading with the orioles, i wouldnt mind getting creative and sending them a young arm for one of their top 3 of prospects

Cambridge Marlin
No one seems to have mentioned Al's contract, which should be subtracted also, Delgado was on an increasing contract each year, cant remember the figures.
