A Castillo-Renteria reunion?

ST. LOUIS ? Luis Castillo's first choice is to remain with the Marlins in 2004 and beyond. His second? Rejoining his best friend.

A free agent at season's end, Castillo is all for reprising his role as Edgar Renteria's double-play partner. The two played together in the Marlins' system and in the majors for parts of three seasons until Renteria was traded to the Cardinals before the 1999 campaign.

"Of course," Castillo said, of whether he'd enjoy turning two with Renteria again. "If something happens and I can't play here, you never know. I would like to sign for three years and be on a good team. If a team like St. Louis gives me an opportunity I'd be happy because I'll be playing with one of my best friends.

"We were here with the Marlins a couple of seasons, and with the experience he has and what I have, I think it's time for us to be together again."

The idea likely appeals to the Cardinals, but they may not be able to afford to make it happen. Fernando Vina is in the final season of a three-year, $15 million deal. The Cardinals have a $4.5 million option for 2004, but they are expected to exercise a $1 million buyout.

Since pitching will be the offseason priority, the Cardinals may decide to stay with rookie Bo Hart at second. Not only has he played exceptional defense and hit .318 through his first 41 games, Hart won't make much more than the $300,000 major league minimum next season.

That's important, considering slugger Albert Pujols is arbitration-eligible for the first time and due a substantial raise.

"If Fernando's not here, I'd like to play with Luis," Renteria said. "I'd give [Castillo] the best recommendation of his life. ... We talk every day, and we're the same friends. St. Louis would benefit him. It's a city that loves its players, and he's a winning player. I think they would love him here." :w00t :thumbup :)

How bout we bring renteria!

I would pick Sea Bass over Edgar. sea Bass is better defensively and, this season, offensively. The only reason we don't realize it is because he doesn't get much attention.

The Cards have Bo Hart, he is good and cheap and they might not bite on getting Castillo. I think Castillo will stay, with a long term deal, but only a $1-2 million raise per year from what he has now.

well I'd stick with Alex right now just because he's cheaper than Edgar (6.5 million) but no way would I take him if all things were equal. Edgar just won the gold glove last year plus he's been a very good and consistent offensive player over the last few years. Alex is hopefully coming into his own this year, but since '99 he hadn't done squat.

And, um, Fernando Vi?a.

Edgar is doing a lot better offensivley, CapeFish.

Edgar Renteria

333. BA 12 HR 70 RBI 25 SB 386. OBP

Alex Gonzalez

281. BA 13 HR 58 RBI 0 SB 328. OBP

The only upgrade I see is defensivley....And it's only very slight.

Edagr Renteria 2003 Salary: $6,500,000

Alex Gonzalez 2003 Salary: $1,700,000

Big salary difference though.

I'm not sure how much each will make next year...I know for sure Alex's salary

will increase.

And, um, Fernando Vi?a.

That's true, but Vina most likely won't be with the Cards next season. He may not even finish the season with the Cards.

What do you guys think the chances are that the Marlins will re-sign Castillo?

Pretty high, I think the FO is high on him and the fans like him. He'll stay before Lee does.

Id rather keep a proven power hitter, but Lee will be more expensive. Singles hitters come much cheaper then the big boppers.

Obviously....Which leads me to belive that the Lee-Conine deal may go down in the offseason...

If my sources are correct Lee makes over 9 million next year.

in the offseason, Conine will be a 10-5 guy, meaning he can void any trade....

i would think Conine would stay in BAL

True...Forget it.

Conine loves Baltimore, I remember reading an article when the Lee-Conine trade was getting hype, In the article he commented and stated he wanted to stay in Baltimore but had no say in the deal.

we also have a lot more depth and more impact-type players in the minors at 1B than we do at middle infield.........whats the name of that guy we drafted who plays SS but is doing really bad?? and we have hopper but i doubt he would be better than, say, a mark deRosa type player.......at 1B we got stokes who has star potential, and i'm sure i remember sham saying we have some other guys at 1B who are playing very well.......so, in all likelyhood, lee is gone next year, but lowell stays before castillo, maybe we can keep both somehow... :thumbup

The FO has thrown his name along with Lowell as the cornerstone players so I think he'll still be here. I would like to see Edgar back but thats got as much of a chance of happening as reuniting the whole 97 team.

Most reports I've seen have Derek making about 7 million next year in arbitration.

Most reports I've seen have Luis making about 7 million next year as a FA.

One of them is a goner, possibly both. But take your pick.

So if the price tag is about the same, do you keep the high average or the power?

well, i didnt know that conine could veto a trade next year, like ramp said, but if that weren't the case, or if conine decidec he would come to s. florida again, i think the marlins could get more out of the O's for lee. Lee should command 2-3 players, not outstanding players, but solid, i think lee should command one mlb guy and atleast a grade B prospect. IMO, does that seem resonable to everyone?? cause im kinda talking out of my a$$, it just makes sense to me...

But Conine won't come here.

He said it himself he wants to stay in Baltimore.

i thought i heard that conine was gonna retire next year.

that is a rumor going around too....

but if the O's get a big name in the offseason, i bet Conine would stay

O's are going to have so much cap room this offseason it is unreal. But somehow I don't see Vlad wearing orange and black (Vazquez yes, though he still has another year under his contract).

If free-agent-to-be Luis Castillo doesn't re-sign with the Marlins, his second choice is to join former double-play partner Edgar Renteria in St. Louis.

Castillo is seeking ''three years on a good team.'' The Cardinals would have an opening, as they are expected to exercise a $1 million buyout on Fernando Vina. However, they may opt to stick with Bo Hart at second base to save some money for the pitching staff, especially with arbitration-eligible Albert Pujols in line for a rather large raise.

yeah, i'll say
