Recommended Posts

MARIETTA, Ga. ? Right-handed pitcher Nic Ungs of the Carolina Mudcats has been proclaimed the double-A Southern League Pitcher of the Week after hurling the league's first 2005 no-hitter last Friday night.

Ungs struck out seven and walked five as Carolina turned back West Tenn, 2-0. He threw 118 pitches.

Carolina has a pair of combined no-hitters (1992 and 2004), but Ungs' performance produced the first individual no-hitter in the franchise's 15-year history.

The gem enabled Ungs to up his record to 6-4 and remain unbeaten in his last eight starts. His 3.13 earned run average currently ranks third in the Southern League.

The Florida Marlins, the parent club of the Mudcats, selected Ungs in the 12th round of the 2001 draft out of the University of Northern Iowa.

Mobile (Ala.) third baseman Corey Smith was tabbed the BC Powder Hitter of the Week.
