not good news for Carl.. hope he doesnt need surgery or anything serious

TORONTO -- New York Yankees right-hander Carl Pavano will skip his next rehabilitation start and have his injured right shoulder examined by specialist Dr. James Andrews.

"It's not good," manager Joe Torre said. "He just felt his shoulder didn't feel right."

Pavano, who signed as a free agent in December, hasn't pitched for the Yankees since June 27 at Baltimore. He experienced more shoulder soreness than normal in the days following that outing and went on the 15-day disabled list July 7.

The Yankees had hoped Pavano would be able to rejoin the team next week.

"As far as I know he didn't do anything more than what he had when we put him on the disabled list," Torre said.

Pavano, 4-5 with a 4.77 ERA, was scheduled to make a start for Double-A Trenton before the Yankees decided to send him to Dr. Andrews.

"He's never been able to elevate his game to where he is comfortable and to where he was last year," Torre said. "Maybe this trip tomorrow we'll find out why."

The news comes at a bad time for the Yankees as Randy Johnson's next start is in doubt because of a bad back. The Yankees are already missing injured starters Kevin Brown, Chien-Ming Wang and Jaret Wright.
