Girardi is still focus for Marlins

Joe Girardi met with the Devil Rays on Sunday while sources said the Marlins are expected to continue their push for the managerial candidate with follow-up talks that could commence today.

The Marlins are expected to intensify their efforts to hire Girardi, the 41-year-old bench coach for the Yankees, to replace Jack McKeon.

But they had to take a back seat Sunday as Girardi and his agent met for three hours in New York with Devil Rays president Matt Silverman and director of baseball development Andrew Friedman.

The Marlins plan to interview Devil Rays third-base coach Tom Foley for the manager's job today and already have spoken to five others about the position.

But all indications are they are focusing their attention on Girardi, who has never managed at any level but is thought to be owner Jeffrey Loria's top choice.

Like the Marlins, the Devil Rays are also looking for a manager after Lou Piniella vacated the position after the season. And, like the Marlins, the Devil Rays aren't finished interviewing job candidates.

Terry Pendleton is set to meet today with the Devil Rays, who already have interviewed Foley, former Detroit manager Alan Trammell, Triple A Durham manager Bill Evers and current coaches John McLaren and Billy Hatcher.

Girardi already has spoken twice with the Marlins. If hired, sources said Girardi would consider bringing in Andres Galarraga as hitting coach. Marlins pitching coach Mark Wiley also might remain in his position after he removed his name from consideration to become the Seattle Mariners' pitching coach.

Girardi talks with Rays

Joe Girardi's quest for a managerial job continued yesterday as the Yankees' bench coach had a formal interview with the Devil Rays.

Girardi, who also is a prime candidate for the Marlins' job, met with D-Rays owner Stuart Sternberg as well as executives Matt Silverman and Andrew Friedman in New York. Girardi had talked informally with Sternberg about the position last week, but this was a more official and in-depth conversation.

Neither Girardi nor his agent, Steve Mandell, returned calls last night. It is expected, however, that the Marlins will talk again with Girardi today or tomorrow. Neither Tampa nor Florida has made a formal offer to Girardi, but it's possible the Marlins - who have had Girardi at the top of their wish list from the beginning - could take that step in this next conversation.

The D-Rays do not seem as far along in their process; they have an interview with Terry Pendleton scheduled for today and have also talked with Alan Trammell as well as four internal candidates.

I just hope they can close on Girardi soon, if that's the top choice

If Girardi becomes our manager(with Stottlemeyer and Galaragga and Zimmer tagging along), would Sheff be more open to a trade here?

No. Girardi's only been there for one season, Zimmer left when Sheff arrived, and I see no reason for Stottlemyre to have any influence.
