SAN FRANCISCO, California (CNN) -- Rescue boats and a helicopter set out at first light Thursday to search for the bodies of two children, whose mother allegedly threw them off a pier into San Francisco Bay.

One body was recovered late Wednesday, about five hours after police received a 911 call saying a woman had dropped as many as three children into the water.

The body was found two miles away from the pier.

Authorities said there was little chance that the children would be found alive in the chilly water.

The San Francisco Chronicle reported Thursday that witnesses saw 23-year-old Lashaun Harris of Oakland take off her children's clothes and drop them off the Scenic Pier 7.

Fire and rescue crews arrived about four minutes after the 911 call, but they did not see any sign of the children.

A stroller and a pile of clothes could be seen on the pier.

Authorities said Harris told them that voices told her to throw the children in the water, according to the Chronicle.

The newspaper identified the children as Trayshaun Harris, 6; Travante Greely, 3; and Joshua Harris, 1.

Harris and her children reportedly had been staying at a Salvation Army shelter in Oakland for about two months.

Mary Ann Ramirez, the shelter's social services manager, told the Chronicle that Trayshaun was "such a sweet child -- he loved school. He started first grade when he came to the Salvation Army; it was a new school."

"He would come home every day, ask his mom to please take me to homework club. He really loved school. He loved his brothers, helped his mom with the kids a lot,'' Ramirez said.

Officers responding to the call detained one person, "who has been taken into one of our facilities," San Francisco Police Chief Heather Fong said, declining to elaborate and citing the ongoing investigation.

The case has been assigned to the homicide unit, Fong said.

The Chronicle reported that Harris had been arrested and booked on suspicion of three counts of murder.

Relatives said Harris suffers from schizophrenia and wasn't taking her medication.

"She was out of her mind. She wasn't in her right mind," a woman who identified herself as Harris' cousin told KGO-TV. "Lashaun wasn't the kind of person to do anything wrong to her kids."

Scenic Pier 7, which juts some 900 feet out into San Francisco Bay and sits adjacent to the historic Ferry Building, would typically be crowded with commuters and tourists at the time of the incident.

The bay's waters are known for their low temperatures and strong tides.

that is like beyond words.

and wtf, she's 23 with 3 kids? nobody should be left alone with children when they are basically pyscho, plain and simple. poor kids, they were so helpless :(
