Carpenter named Outstanding Pitcher

Cardinals ace honored with Players Choice Award

By Matthew Leach / MLB.com

ST. LOUIS -- A year ago, Chris Carpenter's peers recognized his dedication and hard work for coming back from arm injuries. On Thursday, they acknowledged his pure pitching brilliance.

Carpenter won the Players Choice Award as the National League's Outstanding Pitcher. Major League players vote on the Players Choice Awards, and the awards are presented by the Major League Baseball Players Association.

In his second year in a Cardinals uniform, Carpenter emerged as the undisputed ace of a deep starting staff. He went 21-5 in 33 starts, posting a 2.83 ERA over 241 2/3 innings. The right-hander struck out 213 against a mere 51 walks, and allowed only 18 homers.

"For the entire season, he had all of his pitches working," manager Tony La Russa said recently. "I think last year, the second half, he started really adding to what he was going out there with. But when he has all of his pitches, you're talking about four or five things he can do to get hitters out. He can go against righties and lefties, and what we've seen, he's a terrific competitor."
