Spooneybarger will have elbow surgery

NEW YORK -- Right-hander Tim Spooneybarger won't pitch any more this season and might miss significant time next year because the team fears he may need reconstructive elbow surgery.

Spooneybarger, on the disabled list since June 17 with tendinitis in his right elbow, will undergo exploratory arthoscopic surgery today on his elbow in Birmingham, Ala., by Dr. James Andrews.

If Andrews finds ligament damage, he will surgically repair it today. General Manager Admin Beinfest said the team is prepared for the possibility that Spooneybarger will have to undergo Tommy John surgery, which right-handed starter A.J. Burnett had in April.

The news wasn't all bad for the Marlins' bullpen Monday. Right-hander Kevin Olsen was activated from the disabled list after missing more than two months with a concussion.

Olsen was hit in the face with a line drive in Boston on June 27, but says he didn't think about the incident when he pitched last week in minor-league rehab appearances.

"Even when I went out and stretched and started throwing I never thought about it," he said. "I'm looking forward to being out there hopefully soon."

Olsen may not get much action, if any, manager Jack McKeon said. "Him and (Tommy) Phelps are guys who haven't pitched much and they're going to have to wait their turn. I can't even get (Rick) Helling enough work."

Olsen pitched for two playoff teams last week -- the Class A Jupiter Hammerheads on Thursday and Class AAA Albuquerque Isotopes on Saturday. Both teams have been eliminated.

To make room for Olsen on the 40-man roster, the Marlins designated right-handed reliever Vladimir Nunez for assignment. The Marlins have 10 days to trade, release or put him on waivers. Nunez is at Albuquerque.

You never want a guy hurt but he's not going to be terribly missed. We haven't really needed him so far. When he comes back it'll be like we just signed him.

should of had the surgery a few months ago.

Could you imagine the effieciency of a bullpen with a healthy Tim Spooneybarger, Ugueth Urbina, and Braden Looper.

Philly can't touch that!

Spooney has Tommy John surgery

NEW YORK ? The worst-case scenario played out in Dr. James Andrews' operating room Tuesday. Andrews performed Tommy John, or ligament replacement surgery, on Tim Spoooneybarger's right elbow.

Magnetic resonance imaging earlier this season did not reveal any tears. What Andrews found Tuesday was a frayed ligament, which was the source of Spooneybarger's recurring pain.

"It was pretty well gone," said Jimmy Spooneybarger, Tim's father. "[Andrews]went right in with the intention [Tommy John] is what had to be done. ... He came out and said it was frayed pretty bad and they had to do the whole reconstruction. The elbow looked good. The ligament just didn't work."

Spooneybarger became the second Marlin to undergo the procedure. Starter A.J. Burnett had it done in late April and only now is beginning to do light throwing.

The recovery is the same for Spooneybarger, who will be precluded from picking up a baseball for at least four months. Barring any setbacks, he could be ready around this time next season

I knew as soon as this injury started dragging out, something wasn't right....
