Posted March 26, 200618 yr In Miami-Fort Lauderdale, Monday's World Baseball Classic game generated a 6.6 rating (100,452 homes) -- along with San Diego, the highest among Nielsen's 55 metered markets. By comparison, Wednesday's Heat-Pistons game got a combined 4.5 local rating (2.8 on ESPN, 1.7 on Sun). http://www.miami.com/mld/miamiherald/sports/14173489.htm
March 26, 200618 yr Some BS! We can't get a stadium yet this state loves baseball... Political bastards!
March 26, 200618 yr It's a shame none of the games were played down here. Can you imagine some of the crowds for Cuba, DR, Venezuela, etc??? Wow... :confused
March 26, 200618 yr Yeah figuring that a considerable portion of the Greater Miami area is of Cuban origin, you would think out of anyone they would have the most interest in the game. If Cuba made the final of soccer or some other random sport and it was televised in S Fla I am sure rating in S Fla would be high. On the other hand if that championship game was JPN v DR I doubt the rantings would nearly be as high. So how much is it being baseball or a national thing?
March 26, 200618 yr Last season the Marlins had very high TV ratings, however that didn't carry over to actual attendance.
March 26, 200618 yr Last season the Marlins had very high TV ratings, however that didn't carry over to actual attendance. Mainly because South Florida homes have air conditioner and a roof to protect from overwhelming humidity and the daily downpour.

Heat and (I think a more fair comparison) the Panthers play in doors and people still don't show up unless they're winning and/or playing a good team.
March 26, 200618 yr The problem is that they don't care about the Marlins, and those that do, not so much to help them be profitable.

The Panthers have been having near sellouts almost every night for the past few months, and we aren't even a playoff team. The arena is almost always 90%+ filled except for the nosebleeds.
March 26, 200618 yr Author Well, Heat and Panthers attendance figures have always at least been in the respectable range. Out of the South Florida sports teams, only the Marlins have had rock-bottom, outlier type of attendance numbers. The problem is that they don't care about the Marlins What are you basing that on? It's not just Cuban baseball they're watching. The Marlins get good TV ratings down here, as well.
March 26, 200618 yr Fish pull better ratings for at least 1 game a week than a 6.6. They can pull in the 7 or 8 range for a series against a division rival easily and kill network primetime.

The Marlins get good TV ratings down here, as well. The many who wear Yankees caps around and subscribe to Yes, NESN and Extra Innings to watch their teams. Let's face it, the Marlins are going to have a hard time converting those folks.

March 27, 200618 yr um... ok? I know that, but what does that have to do with supporting the Marlins?
March 27, 200618 yr They're ratings for Marlins games. Not all baseball games in general are involved.

Panthers also give away a crap load of free tickets/deeply discounted tickets. Not saying that the Marlins shouldn't do it, but the Panthers gate number is excessively inflated.
