Julian Tavarez vs Joey Gathright

Punched Gathright while he was on the ground? Um, what pictures are you looking at?

After looking at those pictures with a microscope, I'd have to say that Joey Gathright was indeed standing.

Now, when both players went to the ground, they were joined by two Devil Rays and no Red Sox at that immediate moment, as evidenced in the following pictures. So much for him not having anyway of defense either.

Anything else?

If you can't see that Gathright wasn't on the floor like you said ("Just like he punched Gathright when he was on the gorund") then you need glasses more than you need my help in letting you know this. I'm sure you have something much better to spend your time on either way.

5 games, end of issue.

He was on one knee. You go on one knee, not expecting someone to punch you, and I'm going to come up and punch you in your face.

Gathright had no chance of defending himself. You cantt punch on one knee against someone on 2 feet and above you.

  • If you're going to spike someone covering a bag, whether intentional or not, you should prepare for reprocussions. If you spike someone and you don't know that whomever you spiked is going to be tad bothered, you're dumb anyways.
  • One knee does not constitute a player being "on the gorund."
  • You can fully well block or punch from one knee. In fact, blocking from a knee is pretty good form.
  • Tavarez didn't punch him and then step on his face or anything. He simply punched him in the face. Gathright was apparently so dazed and confused by this punch he allegedly wasn't expecting that he got up and jostled with Tavarez. Then, to add fuel to the "he couldn't defend himself" theory, Crawford and an unnamed Devil Ray instantly jumped in to protect their teammate.
  • Since when does punching someone not make you a man? Please. What was he supposed to do, purchase an ad in center field to announce the punch and then put the possibility of a punch up to a 2/3 vote of the Tampa Bay dugout?

Great points except for the part where it was Tavarez who spiked Gathright.

Gathright was sliding into home in the eighth inning when he was tagged out by the often-hot tempered Tavarez, who stepped on the outfielder's right arm.

and suddenly I like Joey Gathright just a bit more

Joey Gathright did not play Wednesday. He has a stiff neck from the punch he received from Boston's Julian Tavarez on Monday.

He's day-to-day. Interestingly, it turns out that Gathright is a black belt in Tae Kwon Do, suggesting that Tavarez is a pretty lucky man for getting away with taking the swing.

Julian was f***ed lol

You're defending Tavarez? WTF is wrong with you?

Exactly madman. Also, when someone is getting up from being on the ground and is still only on one knee when they get clocked (and unexpectedly), that does not count as being being standing nor does it count as being manly on Tavarez part. It was a cheap shot and there is no way Joey was thinking he was going to get punched while lifting himself off the ground. Plus, look at his punching form, it was a closed fist slap, like a girl. I'm sure if you were playing baseball and pushed someones spikes off you, then got punched in the face while standing up unexpectedly, would still agree you deserved it. He is a coward and deserves at least 10 games.

Thank you very much! I agree 100% with your post.

Juanky: in no way is it manly or a sign of strength to punch someone who is not expecting it and is elevating to his feet off the ground. Tavarez was the dumbass who started the confrontation.
