"I'm already there" by Lonestar, the version with the families sending messages to family overseas...we listened to that in Iraq and me, along with everyone else in my company, was in tears. It's strange to see over 80 grown men in an infanty company cry.

"American Soldier" by Toby Keith, this was played at a ceremony for one of my best friends from high school who was killed in Iraq, I honestly cant listen to the song anymore.

"Sonny" by New Found Glory

"Adams Song" by Blink 182

Far and away, "To Where You Are" by Josh Groban.

Runners-up include "Come Around" by Rhett Miller, "Deacon Blues" by Steely Dan, and "Vincent (Starry Starry Night)" by Don McLean (Groban does a great cover as well).

Tears in Heaven by Eric Clapton. Ironically, he wrote it after his son fell to his death from a faulty balcony railing. He won the grammy for best song that year.

Would you know my name

If I saw you in heaven?

Would you feel the same

If I saw you in heaven?

I must be strong and carry on

?cause I know I don?t belong here in heaven...

Would you hold my hand

If I saw you in heaven?

Would you help me stand

If I saw you in heaven?

I?ll find my way through night and day

?cause I know I just can?t stay here in heaven...

Time can bring you down, time can bend your knees

Time can break your heart, have you begging please...begging please

Beyond the door there?s peace I?m sure

And I know there?ll be no more tears in heaven...

Would you know my name

If I saw you in heaven?

Would you feel the same

If I saw you in heaven?

I must be strong and carry on

?cause I know I don?t belong here in heaven...

Remember Me this Way from Casper

Song: Remember Me This Way Lyrics

Every now and then

We find a special friend

Who never lets us down

Who understands it all

Reaches out each time you fall

You're the best friend that I've found

I know you can't stay

A part of you will never ever go away

Your heart will stay

* I'll make a wish for you

And hope it will come true

That life would just be kind

To such a gentle mind

If you lose your way

Think back on yesterday

Remember me this way

Remember me this way

Hmm???.. this way

I don't need eyes to see

The love you bring to me

No matter where I go

And I know that you'll be there

Forever more apart of time, you're everywhere

I'll always cares

(Repeat *)

And I'll be right behind your shoulder watching you

I'll be standing by your side and all you do

And I won't ever leave

As long as you believe

You just believe

(Repeat *)

Though the tempo is a bit quicker than most of the songs listed, I think that one of the saddest songs remains: The Beatles - "Eleanor Rigby"

I think it's the accompanying violin and lyrics that really make the song one of the saddest ever.

"Ah, look at all the lonely people. Where do they all belong?"

"All the lonely people- where do they all come from?"

In 1995, I was conducting my Holiday show at school (I'm a music teacher for those who aren't in the know) and my mom was gravely ill. We sang Remember me this way and I almost lost it.

Immortal Technique - Dance with the Devil and You Never Know

Dance with the Devil, no, but You Never Know, yes.

Dance with the Devil can either be shocking, disgusting, or sad. For me, it's all three.

Another one is Life Goes On by Pac and Suicidal Thoughts by Biggie.

I forgot my saddest one, Tribute by D.I.T.C., in memory of Big L, who could have been one of the greatest rappers alive but his life was cut short at the age of 24.

"No doubt, you left a lastin impression

That's why I'm not too fond of people askin me questions

Your memories'll be hauntin to mines

Or cats out there who didn't want you to shine

They ain't know but I knew and you'll forever be

Big L Corleone, Mister MVP, feel me?"

Here are a couple:

George Jones ~ "He Stopped Loving Her Today"

Dusty Drake ~ "One Last Time"

here are the lyrics:

When she picked up the telephone,

His voice came on the line.

She said: "This can't be happening,"

An' tears fell from her eyes.

She said: "What am I supposed to do?

"I can't handle losin' you."

He said: "I just had to call to say goodbye,

"One last time."

He said: "There are some things in this life,

"That are out of our control.

"Like who we fall in love with,

And when it's time to go."

An' she said: "What about the plans we had?"

He said: "This connection's gettin' bad."

"Now c'mon baby, let me hear you smile,

One last time."

She started to apologise,

For all the things that she'd done wrong.

She said: "I would have loved you better.

If only I'd known."

He said: "You were the perfect wife:

Promise me you'll go on with your life."

She said: "The boys won't understand."

He said: "Tell 'em Daddy loves 'em and, be strong, whoa."

He said: "Honey, I've gotta go."

She said: "Don't you dare hang up.

There's so many things I need to say.

I love you so much."

It was almost like she felt him leave.

She cried out: "Can you still hear me?"

She fell down on the kitchen floor,

When the signal died,

As the pilot tried to pull out of the dive.

One last..

Steve Wariner ~ "Holes in the Floor of Heaven"

and ya...

The Dance. Probably Tony Arata's best song ever that Garth absolutely mastered.

Haligh, haligh, a lie, haligh

The phone slips from a loose grip

Words were missed then, some apology

I didn?t want to tell you this

No, it?s just some guy she's been hanging out with

I don?t know, the past couple weeks I guess

Well, thank you and hang up the phone

Let the funeral start

Hear the casket close

Let?s pin split-black ribbon to your overcoat

Well, laughter pours from under doors

In this house, I don?t understand that sound no more

It seems artificial, like a T.V. set

Well, haligh, haligh, a lie, haligh

This weight it must be satisfied

You offer only one reply

You know not what you do

But you tear and tear your hair from roots

From that same head you have twice removed now

A lock of hair you said would prove

Our love would never die

Well ha ha ha

I remember everything

The words we spoke on freezing South Street

And all those mornings watching you get ready for school

You combed your hair inside that mirror

The one you painted blue and glued with jewelry tears

Something about those bright colors

would always make you feel better

But now we speak with ruined tongues

And the words we say aren?t meant for anyone

It?s just a mumbled sentence to a passing acquaintance

But there was once you

You said you hate my suffering

And you understood

And you?d take care of me

You'd always be there

Well where are you now?

Haligh, haligh, a lie, haligh

The plans were never finalized

But left to hang like yarn and twine

Dangling before my eyes

As you tear and tear your hair from roots

From that same head you have twice removed now

A lock of hair you said would prove

Our love would never die

And I sing and sing of awful things

The pleasure that my sadness brings

As my fingers press onto the strings

In yet another clumsy chord

Haligh, haligh, an awful lie

This weight will now be satisfied

I'm gonna give you only one reply

I know not who I am

But I talk in the mirror

To the stranger that appears

Our conversations are circles

Always one sided

Nothing is clear

Except we keep coming back

To this meaning that I lack

He says the choices were given

Now you must live them

Or just not live

But do you want that?

bright eyes- haligh haligh a lie haligh

bob dylan- just like a woman

creedence- some day never comes

brian jonestown massacre- the devil may care

the doors- wishful, sinful

I haven't heard the Bright Eyes song yet, but I agree with every other song you listed there. All amazing and incredibly sad.
