Posted April 14, 200618 yr Whlie looking at the Rockies @ Diamondbacks game on DirecTV, the Rockies announcers mentioned that last night's attendance of around 17,000 was the smallest for AZ since they started in 1998, and that they thought that tonight's crowd may actually be smaller than last night. So it's not just in South Fla where the attendance is down.
April 14, 200618 yr Author Yeah, and they have out figures nearly doubled. I think you'll see attendance in the 10-12,000 range for the Nats, on Friday & Saturday, but it may dip down again for Sunday to 5-8,000. What was the figure for today's game ?
April 14, 200618 yr Attendance is down because all the long-term agreements are expiring. Same reason the Rockies and the Marlins saw attendance drop big time around 1999 and 2001 respectively. In 1999, when Wayne sold the Marlins, the Dolphin Stadium licenses that helped sell Marlins corporate tickets were not there. In 2001, Coors Field saw a lack of renewals of their deals and the Rockies lost huge amounts of ticket sales. This is normal, remember the Yankees spent 25 years without drawing 1 million fans a year. The Marlins in 13 complete seasons have only drawn under a million fans in a season once. The key to fixing attendance here is two-fold: 1) Build a stadium 2) Build a hometeam

April 14, 200618 yr Author The key to fixing attendance here is two-fold: 1) Build a stadium 2) Build a hometeam Never said better, but can that be done now that Loria & Samson have burned so many bridges in So Fla ?
April 14, 200618 yr The key to fixing attendance here is two-fold: 1) Build a stadium 2) Build a hometeam greatest way to put it ive heard yet. People just want a permanent hometeam. The HEAT and Panthers draw better in their permanent facilities now than they did at the old Miami Arena. Why? You have better facilities, better long-term security, the sense of a hometeam for generations, and a comfort zone for fans. Dolphin Stadium did this for the Dolphins. The new ballpark will do this for the Marlins. SoFla doesn't want to pay extra for baseball in an uncomfortable, old, subpar facility. Panthers (15,936 avg. per game, that's 82.8% capacity): http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/attendance?year=2006 HEAT (19,939 avg. per game, that's 101.7% capacity): http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/attendance

April 14, 200618 yr damm panthers doing pretty good i would have not figured that haven't seen a hokcey game in 2 years before the strike. As for the AA arena it is the best entertainment in my view you can hit a game and hit dinner hang out by brickell downtown clubs. AA arena on it own is great with bongos and bayside water views That must be the reason we had the MTV music awards the last 2 years.. after opening day i had to run to the heat game to see them play the raptor saw Beyonce and J-zay there in the front row guess they are in town

The Dolphins now have reloaded talent and they also have #2 and #3. The Marlins always lagged and depended on the Dolphins and Panthers back when Wayne owned them....and now they struggle big time by themselves.

April 14, 200618 yr Weren't the panthers gving out free tickets all season long? maybe that helped....
April 14, 200618 yr Author The HEAT and Panthers draw better in their permanent facilities now than they did at the old Miami Arena. Why? Because the team was competitive and in the playoffs, and even had a Stanley Cup run in 1996. If you really believe that the Panthers are averaging 15,000+ fans in the building then I have swamp-land for you. Where they come up with these stats is really creative. I have been there a number of times, and there is NO WAY there were more than 10-12,000 at the 10 games I went to this year. More than likely I thought it looked like less than ? capacity. The new stadium has done NOTHING for the Panthers, as they have now missed the playoffs for the 6th season in a row, and has not made them more attractive to the casual fan. Being a playoff team is more important. If the Marlins were off to a 7-1 start, with Delgado, and LoDuca etc...we would be looking at crowds of at least 25,000+ per game this weekend. How can we be assured that Loria will field a competitive team after he gets his stadium ? So far all of his business decisions have been focused on getting the new stadium. That is the only reason he added payroll last year to the team. It was to get that stadium deal. He made a deal with Mike Lowell that was tied to a stadium deal. Even the Lowell deal didn't have a no-trade clause with a new stadium, he still could have been traded....and probably would have been. With Loria its all about the $$$$. He gets his new stadium, and sells skyboxes (which include revenue for all events even those non-baseball related) and sits back and collects money in the millions every year -- and can get paid luxury tax money. Trust me it WILL happen.
April 14, 200618 yr Attendance stats are based on tickets sold not actual people in the facility. You love being wrong don't you?
April 14, 200618 yr Author well the d-backs unlike us will have a stadium that's seats will fill up (no, not all the way)........ours is another story. The fact is the bloom is off the rose bush in AZ. The new ballpark hasn't made AZ competitive. It hasn't made Baltimore competitive, it hasn't made Colorado or Milwaukee competitive. Look at Seattle the last couple of years, 60-70 wins each year, and attendance has dipped drastically. The new stadiums are not the panacea for teams as eveyone thinks. However it is a boon for the pockets of the owners who get all the luxury box money revenue.

Trust me it WILL happen. Agreed. After Loria makes his contribution to the stadium, will he have enough money to field another $65m roster? BTW 96 panthers = 97 Marlins. WH just purchased the best players he could to try and draw fans and win a championship to get himself a new stadium/arena.

April 14, 200618 yr As long as people don't understand that a) there are two sides to a balance sheet and it's not ALL about revenue and b) that all the money in the world won't translate into a winning ballclub if you don't have good scouts and GM and player personnel team to build a winning club.

And Luck.....
April 14, 200618 yr here it is all about winning - the d'backs have always had this stadium and winning a WS shows they can be competative in it - right now they are in the down side the cycle, a WS hangover of sorts - ownership and management has toggled - they have some young talent and look for attendance to go back up next year
April 14, 200618 yr Looks like at least 15k to me. Maybe 17k or 20k? We shall see as the game continues and people reach their seats.
