Posted April 29, 200618 yr I thought it was cool, even though it's just a blurb, that we're getting some publicity nationally (technically this is Canadian, so internationally). Marlins' Ramirez is speedy and patient Marlins SS Hanley Ramirez has emerged as one of the fastest players in the majors; one scout says he goes home to first from the right side in 3.8 to 4.0 seconds. Ramirez, 22, also has shown maturity at the plate. He is swinging aggressively early in the count but settling for putting the ball in play with two strikes. Now, Ramirez needs to prove he can hit to the opposite field. http://www.hamiltonspectator.com/NASApp/cs...l=1112274690734
April 29, 200618 yr I was a bit surprised at how quickly he went 1st to 3rd yesterday on Uggla's hit to CF. He definitely has speed, to go along with his quickness and good eye at the plate. This guy is the real deal.
April 29, 200618 yr And so now what he has to do is learn how not to airmail throws around the diamond. The kid is developing quickly into one of the best young players in the game but he needs to spend more time on certain aspects of his defensive game if he wants to be a complete ballplayer.

A couple of errant throws yesterday contributed to 2 runs scored. It wasn't clear that he would have thrown out the runner at 1B, but a good throw would have been very close. (Besides, Jacobs should have touched 1B and thrown home IMO instead of trying to go the long way for the DP) He sailed the ball over Olivo for another run, yet admittedly the throw from Willingham was terrible. To his credit, he made a couple of real nice plays coming in on squibblers. He'll work this out and will be one of the studs in the lineup for the next few years.

I agree PB on Willingham's throw and I may have already commented here on that (who remembers??) but it was nothing short of awful. Perhaps there is a reason Girardi does want to use a defensive replacement as often as possible in left field late in games. But that said, I have to continue to remind myself this team is a work in progress and the guys are smart enough to learn from their mistakes.
