MARLINS NOTEBOOK

Hermida's return delayed again

BY CLARK SPENCER

The timetable for injured outfielder Jeremy Hermida's return to the lineup continues to be pushed back. Manager Joe Girardi said the Marlins are now targeting next Friday.

''I've got to run the bases at close to 100 percent before I can play in a game,'' said Hermida, who has been out since April 11 with a strained right hip flexor.

``I don't want to go back in there at 85 percent and be detrimental to the team.''

Hermida was eligible to come off the disabled list Friday, and Girardi said in Chicago this week that he thought the outfielder could be ready by Monday. But Hermida said he still is running at about 80 percent.

Girardi said Hermida likely would make a rehabilitation assignment sometime this week.

MOEHLER TAKES SPOT

Sergio Mitre, who was scheduled to start Friday, relinquished his spot to Brian Moehler because of a turf toe injury sustained Sunday in Philadelphia.

Mitre will start Sunday against the Rockies.

Girardi said Mitre injured his right big toe, which he uses to push off the pitching rubber.

MARTINEZ UPDATE

Reliever Carlos Martinez, who is on the disabled list with a strained right elbow, can start playing catch Monday.

''We won't rush him,'' Girardi said. ``He's too young and too valuable.''

Martinez said his elbow doesn't feel sore and that he was relieved when an examination by Dr. James Andrews last week in Alabama didn't turn up anything more serious.

But, assuming the injury doesn't worsen, it could be at least a month before the pitcher is ready for game action.

thats fine by me...april and may could be really ugly record wise...but this year is about getting next year...and just remember...21 other teams arent making the playoffs either

thats a good way too look at it 21 other teams not making the playoffs but if we lose as many games as you think we are all i can say is ouch im just hoping the Braves dont get that divison title :mischief

I'm concerned with Hermedia. This moving time-table smells fishy

Does anyone know just how Hermida injured his hip? It seems somewhat mysterious.

running first to third on a Cabrera hit during the home opener against San Diego, he tweaked something pulling into third, played the rest of the game cause he thought he was ok, then felt it the next day and was out of the lineup

The Hermida situation is really depressing, and the longer this goes on the more I worry that he will never be able to stay healthy. I know it's not entirely rational, but it's just a gut feeling.

I thought the report on Martinez was that he blew out his elbow. Does anyone have a report on specifically what the injury/damage is?

All they've said is strained elbow. If he has been cleared to toss and doesn't feel anything in the elbow, I seriously doubt there is any structural damage.
