LOS ANGELES (AFP) - Lance Armstrong renewed his verbal attack on the French, bashing their World Cup team during an American awards show and using a derogatory word to describe the players.

"All their players (France) tested positive ... for being a** holes," the seven-time Tour de France winner Armstrong was quoted as saying in the Los Angeles Daily News on Friday.

The American cycling hero Armstrong made his comments in his opening monologue as the host of ESPY Awards, an annual televised event produced by ESPN.

The show was taped on Wednesday at Hollywood's Kodak Theatre and is scheduled to be aired on Sunday night.

Armstrong said afterwards that he didn't regard his comments about the French as being offensive.

"Well, if they'd live with me and heard me at home, they'd know that was a step down," Armstrong told the newspaper.

Armstrong, a cancer survivor, retired from competitive cycling in 2005 after capturing his seventh Tour title.

Because of the Tour de France's timing, this is the first year he has been able to attend the show in person to pick up his awards, including four straight athlete-of-the-year trophies.

I hope Zizou headbutts him

you would....

French always deserve verbal bashing.

Grow up.

my, you really are touchy about all things france.

Now really, however...

It's an uneducated/stupid point of view that he was raised to think without thinking about why. It's pretty much a stereotype at this point of America and a sad commentary on how stupid we are as a society and deal with somewhat complex issues on a 3rd grade level.

Good, I'm glad he said this.

The French slung mud at him so much during his dominance and if any of you have read It's Not About the Bike or Every Second Counts you know how much a living hell they made his time on the tour.

Are those good reads? I'm really into cycling and really look up to Lance. Maybe I should check them out.

I'm a big Lance fan so it's easy for me to say that but I read It's Not About the Bike and it details his comeback from cancer, how it changed him, etc and it is one of the most inspirational books I've ever read. I got it after I tore up my knee and it helped me alot.

His story telling is great and since you like cycling and Lance I definitely reccommend it.

The 2nd book talks about more years on the tour of course, his charity foundation, downfall of his marriage, etc. It's very good as well and fans will really like it. Not as good as the first but definitely something good to read.

Lance is the man. He had a brief cameo in the movie "You, Me and Dupree" that came out on Friday. It's still pretty funny though.

It's no secret that the French riders (and people) were not happy seeing an American win their race 5 years in a row, and set that record.

They kept trying to say that he was using steroids, which was a load of crap.

Just to play devil's advocate, hasn't everyone on Lance's team tested positive for steroids? I'm not saying that means he did, but who's to say we really know for sure?
