MIAMI (Ticker) -- In a sub-par National League, the Atlanta Braves and Florida Marlins still have playoff hopes despite sitting eight games below .500.

The Braves and Marlins both try to hold onto their fading playoff hopes Friday when they square off in the opener of a three-game series.

Atlanta is coming off of a split of a four-game series with Washington. Oscar Villarreal made his first start of the 2006 season in Thursday's series finale, tossing five impressive innings in a 5-0 win.

The Marlins salvaged the final game of their three-game set against the Los Angeles Dodgers, who had their six-game winning streak snapped. Miguel Cabrera had three hits, including two home runs, and drove in five runs for Florida in a 15-4 victory on Wednesday.

Atlanta and Florida each sit 5 1/2 games behind Cincinnati (62-59) for the top spot in the NL wild card standings.

Tim Hudson (9-10, 4.94 ERA) takes the mound for the Braves, looking to continue his impressive August. The veteran righthander has gone 1-1 with a 2.75 ERA in three outings.

Hudson has struggled on the road this season, however, posting a 6-5 record with an inflated 5.27 ERA away from Turner Field.

He is opposed by Scott Olsen (9-6, 4.19), who has impressed in his first full year in Florida's rotation. However, the 22-year-old lefthander has struggled in August, going 0-2 with a 6.75 ERA in three starts.
