One in 10 Muslims 'would not inform'

Shock poll: A survey found one in 10 Muslims would not inform on a terrorist

Almost one in 10 British Muslims would not inform police if they suspected that someone of the same faith was involved in a terror attack, a poll has suggested.

The ICM poll for the News of the World found nine per cent of the 502 questioned would not tell police if they had such suspicions about a fellow Muslim.

With a Muslim population aged over 16 in Britain of around one million, that would translate to 90,000 "turning a blind eye", the newspaper said.

However, almost nine out of every 10 (86 per cent) would contact police, according to the survey.

Among young Muslims, the figures for keeping quiet were higher with 15 per cent of 16 to 24-year-olds saying they would not tell police and 81 per cent saying they would.

The poll also found that one in 20 Muslims thought attacks like the July 7 bombings were justified.

And more than half (56 per cent) said they did not believe a police warning that there are thousands of extremist British Muslims willing to carry out attacks here.

Just over a third (34 per cent) of those questioned believed the warning and 10 per cent said they "did not know".

The research also asked Muslims what factors were responsible for continued terror attacks in Britain.

Tony Blair, "Islamophobia" and the Islamic community's "failure" to root out extremists were among the favoured reasons.

More than eight in 10 (86 per cent) said the Prime Minister should shoulder some of the blame and 72 per cent blamed non-Muslims for racist and "Islamophobic" behaviour.

However, two thirds (66%) said the Muslim community's failure to root out extremists was a factor.

Meanwhile, 83 per cent accepted that the terrorists themselves were to blame although one in 10 said they were not.

ICM Research interviewed 502 Muslims aged 16 and over by telephone between September 8 and 20.

The data was weighted to the profile of Muslims across the country.

And this was 10% in a POLL, which means that there's a good margin of error not to mention the fact that poll respondents tend to not be truthful when the answers skirt illegality, the actual number is most likely much higher than 10%.

I would say that there is less then 10% most likely as the poll could just as easily favor a higher number then lower in respondants. Plus it has bigger news and selling ability with the higher number.

Could also be lower than 10%. Why immediately jump to conclude it'd be higher?

Poll participants often falsely respond when the question deals with an illegal activity. I doubt it would even double the number to 20%, but it does show that there is a distinct demographic of Muslims, even in Western nations, that adhere to the philosophy of violent Jihad.

That is why it is so important to make the point that the enemy is one that claims to fight in the name of Islam. Hopefully that would motivate peaceful Muslims to actively reject them and expel them from their communities.

It's one poll. I wouldn't take too much out of it.

However, I do think that Britain (and Europe as a whole) have a problem with Islamic extremism.

well thats normal considering the high number of immigrants coming from both the african and middle eastern countries

How many Irish people will report a crime? How many Italians will snitch on the mob?

Dumb poll.

thank you
