Posted November 28, 200618 yr TORONTO … (AP) … Gregg Zaun remained with the Toronto Blue Jays, agreeing Tuesday to a $7.25 million, two-year contract after the team's apparent agreement with Rod Barajas fell through. "We came to terms with Gregg Zaun at about midnight,'' general manager J.P. Ricciardi said at a news conference to introduce Frank Thomas, the team's new designated hitter. "Gregg Zaun is our catcher.'' Ricciardi said late Monday that the deal with Barajas was not going ahead. Ricciardi declined to comment about why the contract with Barajas wasn't completed. Several reports had said Barajas needed only to pass a physical for his deal with the Blue Jays to be finalized, and it was likely to be announced Tuesday. Ricciardi wanted to bring back Zaun, but was initially reluctant to meet his asking price. Zaun's new deal including an option for 2009 that could become guaranteed based on appearances. Zaun was said to have drawn interest from Boston and New York, where he would have been a backup. Zaun hit .272 with 12 home runs and 40 RBIs last season as the backup to Bengie Molina, whom Ricciardi is not interested in re-signing. Barajas batted .256 with 11 homers and 41 RBIs in 97 games for Texas. The Blue Jays scheduled a news conference Tuesday to introduce designated hitter Frank Thomas, who agreed to a two-year, $18 million contract last week. WOAH This market is out of control...7.25 M for a back-up catcher....that is CRAZY!!!
November 28, 200618 yr OH YES, Greg Zaun, forget arb we better lock up our star players NOW, this is getting out of control.
November 28, 200618 yr I mean, it's paying him to be the starter, and he posted respectable numbers in limited play last year. It's still under $4 mil annually.
November 28, 200618 yr That is crazy. 3.6 mil a year for a freakin' back-up catcher. That's more than Nolasco, Uggla, Olsen, JJ, Jacobs, Ramirez, Willingham, Hermida, and Cabrera COMBINED and you'd still have 185,000 left. Haha.

November 28, 200618 yr Author As Swifty alluded to, Zaun is the starter now so if that is the case then Bengie Molina just became the overpaid backup
