Posted December 26, 200618 yr Iran furious at Iraq arrests Mon Dec 25, 6:51 AM ET news.yahoo.com/s/afp/20061225/wl_mideast_afp/iraqsecurityiranus_061225115107 Iran has condemned the arrest by US forces of a number of Iranian officials in Baghdad, warning that the move could lead to "unpleasant consequences". "This action is not compatible with international law and it will have unpleasant consequences," foreign ministry spokesman Mohammad Ali Hosseini was quoted as saying by the Mehr agency on Monday. He did not elaborate. At least two Iranian officials have been arrested, allegedly because they were planning to incite attacks in the already war-torn country. A spokesman for Iraqi President Jalal Talabani said two Iranians invited by the president to work on improving security in Iraq had been arrested by US forces. "A few days ago, we became aware that US forces, contrary to international laws, have arrested Iranian diplomats who were invited by the Iraqi government," Hosseini added. "These people were invited by the Iraqi government to provide help. The Iraqi government is responsible for their freedom and the occupiers should be held responsible, based on international law." He added that the Swiss ambassador, who looks after US interests in the absence of an American embassy in Tehran, was summoned to the foreign ministry to hear an official protest. The United States severed diplomatic ties with Iran in 1980 in the wake of the seizure of its embassy in Tehran by Islamist students and ties have remained frozen ever since. Washington has repeatedly accused Iran of interfering in Iraq and aiding militants, charges vehemently denied by the Islamic republic.

December 26, 200618 yr Terrorism is against international law. Any country with the international law built into their system has jurisdiction over these charges. Spain has already shown this in the Pinochet trials.
December 28, 200618 yr Immunities are tricky when the immune party is violating international law. Diplmatic immunity usually applies to immunity from the domestic laws of that state.
