HANDICAPPING THE FINS' FINALISTS

At a time when many members of the South Florida media believe that Georgia Tech coach Chan Gailey is the favorite to succeed the Nicktator as the coach of the Dolphins, one of our connections in the Miami area has laid out for us what he believes to be the current thinking of the organization.

The finalists for the position, according to said connection, are (in this order) Chargers offensive coordinator Cam Cameron, former Falcons coach Jim Mora, and Gailey.

We continue to hear that Mora was offered the job on Monday, though the team has denied it. As we've been told, Mora waffled too much regarding his interest, so the franchise moved on and had a great second interview with Cameron.

So as it now stands, Cameron has the inside track. Mora is next in line. If neither take the job, it falls to Gailey.

So why, you ask, would Mora hem and haw about getting back on the horse so soon after getting thrown from it? Falcons owner Arthur Blank is on the hook to pay Mora for the next two years as if he still were the coach in Atlanta. It's money in the bank for Mora. And any money he makes coaching the Dolphins (or anyone else) will reduce Blank's liability to him.

Typically, however, other earnings (such as those Mora could make as a sock puppet) don't count against the money he's already due to be paid by the Falcons.

It makes sense, then, that Mora would at once like to keep his name in circulation, so that he can find work when his severance package expires, but at the same time be tempted to get paid good money to do nothing through 2008. Though he might ultimately resolve the issue by opting to coach, it's not the kind of a decision that can be made on the spot.

We're also told that Mike Shula has a realistic shot at being hired as an offensive assistant, possibly even offensive coordinator, but will not be named the next coach of the team.

Based on a report in the Atlanta Jounal-Constitution (scroll down for more), a decision could come as soon as Thursday.

What I took from this

1. Cameron had a good interview, which is good to hear

2. Mora, whom I dont want, might or might not of been offered the job

3. Shula as a QB coach would be nice with Garrett as OC.

4. I still dont want chan gailey

San Diego Chargers offensive coordinator Cam Cameron arrived at the Dolphins' facility with general manager Randy Mueller at 12:40 p.m. today, shortly after team officials huddled for more than two hours to decide who they would hire.

At approximately 12:25 p.m., Mueller left the team's facility in his Lexus, only to return 15 minutes later with Cameron in the passenger seat. Two people close to the search said nothing has been solidified, and no offer has been made.

Owner Wayne Huizenga also arrived at the team's facility at 9:45 a.m.

After arriving in South Florida Wednesday evening, Cameron spent 13 ? hours over the following two days meeting with Dolphins officials. The team asked Cameron to stay overnight again Thursday as they would decide his fate at some point today.

The Dolphins have decided Cam Cameron should be their next coach and are in the process of finalizing details of the hiring, a source close to the process has told The Miami Herald.

Among the details that are being worked out is whether Cameron indeed wants the job. Cameron was said to have to speak with his family about moving from Coronado, Calif.

If that hurdle is cleared, a contract would have to be worked out and that could take up to one day.

The team brought Cameron back to its Davie training facility for a third consecutive day this afternoon following a morning of meetings between owner Wayne Huizenga and his staff.

Upon arriving, Cameron was escorted into a meeting with Huizenga.

About 12:25 p.m. today, general manager Randy Mueller left the team's facility in his Lexus, only to return 15 minutes later with Cameron in the passenger seat. About 2 p.m., Huizenga and Cameron were still meeting at the facility.

Cameron, the offensive coordinator for the San Diego Chargers and former head coach at Indiana, had spent the night at the Renaissance Hotel in Plantation after interviewing with the Miami officials the previous Wednesday evening and Thursday.

The Dolphins have planned no news conferences to introduce Cameron since the hiring process is still incomplete.

I have a feeling he's going to turn down the offer. His wife probably wants to stay in So. Cal. It's odd that they wouldn't have discussed this before he interviewed with the Dolphins a second time.

Considering his wife is from Miami she probably would be interested in the move.

Maybe, maybe not.

It said he has to talk to his family. I just assumed there might be a hangup with the location. People either love Miami or hate it. Seems like Saban and his family couldn't stand it.

f*** this...... he was hot before the second half of the pats game......

he rushed the best player in the game 16 times and they were dominating the first half before the defense gave up that TD to brady....

then he realized let me only rush LT nine times in the second half.... if anyone lost SD the game it was CAM and maybe the SD defense......

im not the type dude to judge somebody ova one game...... according to his history he has had 5 very good years in SD and if he is my coach well so be it...... like the dude before me said......

i just wanna win some damn games.......
