Tony Gwynn and Cal Ripken are your class of 2007

Gwynn, Ripken elected to Hall of Fame

ESPN.com news services

NEW YORK -- Mark McGwire fell far short in his first try for the Hall of Fame, picked by 23.5 percent of voters while Tony Gwynn and Cal Ripken Jr. easily gained baseball's highest honor.

Tarnished by accusations of steroid use, McGwire appeared on 128 of a record 545 ballots in voting released Tuesday by the Baseball Writers' Association of America.

Ripken was picked by 537 voters, appearing on 98.5 percent of ballots, falling just short of the record percentage of 98.84 set by Tom Seaver when he was selected on 425 of 430 ballots in 1992.

Gwynn was just behind with 532 votes, 97.6 percent.

Goose Gossage was third with 71.2 percent of the vote, falling just short of the 75 percent needed.

The induction will take place July 29 in Cooperstown.

Information from The Associated Press was used in this report.

obvious picks...would love to have seen either Goose or Hawk make it but I guess we will have to wait til next year

Too many people get snubbed by idiotic writers. And, any writer who did not vote for both Gwynn and Ripken Jr. should have his voting priveleges revoked.

weak classes the next 2 years so Big Mac, Goose, Hawk could all have their day

:notworthy

I don't wanna say am happy McGuire was left out because he was a great player but am glad he didn't get in this year...

2008: Shawon Dunston, Travis Fryman, David Justice, Mike Morgan, Tim Raines, Randy Velarde

2009: Mark Grace, Rickey Henderson, Dean Palmer, Dan Plesac, Matt Williams

2010: Andres Galarraga, Edgar Martinez, Robin Ventura

Plenty of room over the next 3 years. Rickey is the only guarentee.

Shawon is also a guaranteed first-ballot.

Raines will probably get in, Grace should as well but not first ballot

Anyone that doesn't vote Rickey Henderson first-ballot needs to cease writing, IMO

No Dought Ricky is a first-ballot......

As for Grace and a couple of other guys coming up they were great players but not elite players.....

It's the freakin Hall of Fame only the best of the best should get in....

out all those guys above i only like Ricky to get in and Edgar a maybe cause he did have great numbers but he was a DH.....

so next year is the year of the goose and jim rice (unfortunately)

I have no clue what will happen in 2009 though, we could see a Rickey only year....

Ditto for the one clown who voted for Jay Buhner.

The following players will no longer be eligilbe for the Hall of Fame ballot due to not receiving at least 5% of the vote:

Orel Hershiser, Albert Belle, Paul O'Neill, Bret Saberhagen, Jose Canseco, Tony Fernandez, Dante Bichette, Eric Davis , Bobby Bonilla, Ken Caminiti, Jay Buhner, Scott Brosius, Wally Joyner, Devon White, Bobby Witt.

Steve Garvey is also off the ballot due to not being elected in his 15th time on the ballot.

won't they go to veteran's committee though?

i'm kinda sad cammy only got two measly votes for the hall of fame....he tried so much to clean up the sport, but he passed before the steroid hearings sadly.

and btw, gwynn and ripken should have gotten unanimous votes. i like to know why they didn't vote for them. and also why did gwynn get five less votes than ripken? this is the classic debate of average vs. power hitter here. i thought ripken still got a bit more press than gwynn, but at least it wasn't as annoying as the retirement period where ripken was getting the press, and gwynn was getting squat. but i guess mcgwire won this debate, as a big home run guy dominated all the talk over the other two.

congrats to them, we always knew they would make it in

doesnt matter.

not a hall of famer; numbers speak for themselves.

Next year Hawk and Goose

Then Ricky and Rice ?

Not exactly strong classes coming up.

I'm as big a fan of Dawson as anyone, but he's not a hall of famer... Neither is Rice, who I am not a fan of.

we could see a Rickey only year....

Wow. How appropriate would THAT be!

Raines will be one of those fringe guys that miss on his 15th attempt. Grace isn't even a fringe guy. The only thing that will keep him on the ballott is a bunch of even weaker candidates. Steve Garvey was a stronger candidate than either of these two and he's on the outside looking in.

Well, he is the greatest of all time
