Campusano stays hot in winter playoffs

Jose Campusano remains one of the hottest hitters in the Dominican Winter League playoffs for the Gigantes del Cibao.

The 23-year-old infielder is 5-for-11 with two runs scored and one stolen base in his last five games. Overall, he is batting .529 (9-for-17) with five runs scored, one RBI and three stolen bases in eight postseason games.


Campusano, who was signed as a non-drafted free agent in April 2003, hit .294 with 11 runs scored, two RBIs and seven stolen bases in 23 regular-season contests.


Here is how the rest of the Marlins have fared recently in winter ball action:


Venezuela Winter League


RHP Mauro Zarate -- The 23-year-old reliever is 1-0 in six playoff appearances for the Leones del Caracas. He has yielded four hits and struck out five in 6 2/3 scoreless innings. The Venezuela native went 1-1 with a 4.10 ERA in 19 regular-season appearances.


SS Emilio Ontiveros -- The 22-year-old completed the season batting .269 with seven runs scored and an RBI in 14 games with the Pastora de los Llanos, who did not qualify for the playoffs.


RHP Jesus Silva -- Silva went 3-4 with a 4.03 ERA in 15 games (14 starts) for the Pastora de los Llanos. Opponents batted .253 against the 23-year-old right-hander, who signed a Minor League deal but doesn't have an invite to big-league camp.


3B Jesus Rojas -- Rojas, who joined the Pastora de los Llanos in late December, went 0-for-4 with a walk in three games.


CF Alex Sanchez -- After being one of the hottest hitters in Venezuela, the 30-year-old outfielder ended the season on a mini-slide, going 2-for-17 in his final four games. Sanchez, a non-roster invitee to Spring Training, batted .350 with three home runs, 22 RBIs, 22 runs scored and four stolen bases in 35 games with the Tiburones de La Guaira, who didn't qualify for the playoffs.


LHP Renyel Pinto -- The 24-year-old won two of his final three starts for the Caribes de Oriente. He went 2-1 with a 3.00 ERA in six games (four starts), limiting opponents to a .221 batting average. The Caribes did not make the playoffs.


RHP Harvey Garcia -- Garcia, who joined the Leones del Caracas in late December, went 0-1 with a 15.43 ERA in three games. He has not appeared in the postseason.


3B Miguel Cabrera -- The Major League All-Star has been hot in his last six playoff games for the Tigres de Aragua, going 8-for-23 with five RBIs and five runs scored. That stretch has raised his postseason average to .304 with one home run, 11 RBIs and seven runs in 12 games. The Marlins third baseman, who was added to the Tigres' roster in late December, hit .375 with one homer, four runs scored and three RBIs in five regular-season contests.


Dominican Winter League


INF Agustin Septimo -- The 22-year-old is 2-for-5 with a run scored and two walks in three playoff games for the Gigantes del Cibao. He hit .216 (8-for-37) with one home run, nine runs scored, six RBIs and three stolen bases in 23 regular-season contests.


CF Alejandro De Aza -- The 22-year-old outfielder batted .238 with one home run, seven runs scored, four RBIs and one stolen base in 17 regular-season contests for the Estrellas de Oriente, who did not make the playoffs.


RHP Henry Owens -- The 27-year-old reliever did not appear in a game after Nov. 17 with the Tigres del Licey. He finished the season 1-0 with a 0.79 ERA in 10 games and led the league with nine saves. Owens has not made a postseason appearance.


RHP Eddy Rodriguez -- The 25-year-old has not pitched in the playoffs after posting a 6.75 ERA in eight regular-season games with the Tigres. Opponents batted .387 against him.


RHP Felix Rodriguez -- Rodriguez, who was signed to a Minor League contract with an invitation to Spring Training on Jan. 12, is 1-0 in four playoff appearances for the Tigres. He has struck out four and walked one over 3 1/3 hitless innings. The native of the Dominican Republic posted a 27.00 ERA in three regular-season contests.


Mexican Pacific League


LHP Arturo Barradas -- The 19-year-old made just one regular-season appearance for the Tomateros de Culiacan on Nov. 9, allowing a hit to the only batter he faced. He has not appeared in the playoffs.


INF Alfredo Amezaga -- Amezaga continues his torrid playoff hitting for the Yaquis de Obregon. He is batting .362 (17-for-47) with one homer, eight RBIs and eight runs scored in 11 games. The 28-year-old utilityman hit .297 with three homers, 24 runs scored, 15 RBIs and 14 steals in 39 games for the Marlins.




Why is Campusano not playing in the outfield this winter???
