WildMarlinMan2003
I've been saying it all along.... Bernie Williams. He can be had for cheap. For the haters who say he can't play CF anymore- oh hum, the last 3 years, he has played 2,894.1 innings and has 4 errors. That's right, last year in CF in 200 innings, he had 0 errors. He can still hit good too. Get Bernie Williams now- he can still play and he's better than anything we have. He would get all the New Yorkers to the stadium and be a great clubhouse guy! How is this guy still on the market!? 1995 - Winter League All-Star OF 1996 - AL MVP (Voting Rank: #17), ALCS Most Valuable Player 1997 - AL Glove Glove Award (OF), Played in MLB All-Star Game, AL MVP (Voting Rank: #17) 1998 - AL Glove Glove Award (OF), AL MVP (Voting Rank: #7), Baseball America Second-Team Major League All-Star CF, Played in MLB All-Star Game 1999 - Baseball America Second-Team Major League All-Star OF, AL Glove Glove Award (OF), AL MVP (Voting Rank: #11), Played in MLB All-Star Game 2000 - Played in MLB All-Star Game, AL MVP (Voting Rank: #13), AL Glove Glove Award (OF) 2001 - Played in MLB All-Star Game 2002 - AL Silver Slugger Award (OF), AL MVP (Voting Rank: #10) Bernie, Bernie, Bernie...... Guest markotsay7
Center field at Yankee Stadium is not center field at Dolphin Stadium. And we need a long term CF. We're likely not competing this year, we're building toward the future. Bernie doesn't help us at all.

We're likely not competing this year, we're building toward the future. Bernie doesn't help us at all. I disagree. Our kids need someone to look up to- a former champion. He can play RF too incase Hermida doesn't live up to expectations. Oh yeah, he hit like .320 vs lefties last year and over .300 away from Yankee Stadium with about 29 doubles and 12 homers. Bernie still had an OPS last year of .768- way better than anything we have. Bernie's a career .297 hitter with an OPS of .858....

WildMarlinMan2003
I think Beinfest is trying to get him. Although, I don't care for these 2- we let Erstad and Preston Wilson get away (signed for only 1 yr, $1 million). Bernie Williams means more to a team than just a player. A young team that needs a veteran- ala "Jeff Conine, Pudge" type of player. Bernie fits that mold.

So less than 23 whole games in CF. Is that something you really want to brag about? Anyways, it's just not happening. Even less likely than Upton or Baldelli (and that's saying something). He can't and won't be had for cheap. And I'll reserve my comments about the NYers for when the Mets come to visit. Even if he can still play, he's not going to play CF everyday for the Marlins, and nothing less would be able to justify the potential cost. I could see being our opening day CFer for $1 million or 900 K with incentives. He wants to prove to the Yanks they made a mistake and said this week, thats he's open to sign with another team. If we let the Phils get him- trust me, we will regret it.

And if they do, I'd much rather try to manage a way to steal away Victorino. Then they can have Bernie all they want. But truth be told, I think they'd have to be insane to put someone else up to block Victorino in CF.

Junior
Bernie Williams couldn't play CF in my backyard anymore. Hermida would be a better option, and I don't think he could do it either. He wants to go somewhere that has a legit chance at winning it all this year. The Marlins (and Reds) most likely don't.
PBCMarlinsFan
If the Marlins were going to sign someone around Bernie's age, I would have liked to see them sign Lofton to a one-year deal. I definitely doubt Williams has the ability to effectively cover the ground in DS, but how poorly does he compare to our current real options in centerfield besides Reed? WildMarlinMan2003
I don't understand why some people don't want a veteran leader who is better than anyone player in CF we have. He doesn't have to have 500-600 ABs....only about 300.
Backin2008
Sure the Marlins should sign Bernie Williams. He might be old, but he's a CF which the Marlins don't currently have on their roster. With the exception of Reed & Abercrombie the Marlins don't have someone that's natural position is CF. Ross, Borchard and Amezaga are poor CFs. For the record: 2006 season Bernie Williams .281 AVG, .768 OPS Alfredo Amezaga .260 AVG., .664 OPS Cody Ross .227 .724 Abercrombie .212 .604 Joe Borchard .230 .722 Eric Reed .098 .276 Alex Sanchez Minors
