With the marlins pen looking inexperienced, why didn't they keep Jason Vargas around and make him a set up man? I think he could have been converted into a solid set up man. Any opinions?

Vargas shows how unpredictable it is to speculate on the performance of any of our starters, besides Dontrelle.

I believe last year at this time the consensus on this board had Vargas as our #3 starter with high expectations.

yeah, but he was only starting regularly for not even 2 months in '05.

If anything was certain going into last season was that Vargas was on his way to having a huge season...Didn't happen! He lost track of the strike zone, then he couldnt get an out on any level.

Vargas wasn't anything special and most of us realized that, so the prediction of him having a huge season wasn't the popular view. Most here pegged Olsen to be the more succesful one and we were right.

 

Vargas isn't even as appealing an option as the 8 dozen guys ahead of him competing for spots, and the two guys we got in a trade have much more success potential out of the pen than Vargas. The Mets needed potential starters and we needed guys who had the potential to develop into legitimate bullpen guys instead of starters whose stuff doesn't work in the pen, so it worked out. I'm rooting for him in New York.

But after seeing what else we had, it was obvious he was inferior to the likes of Johnson, Olsen, Sanchez and Nolasco.. and it seemed obvious, to me anyway, that our two other lefties (Tank, Pinto) were much more solid than him. FO liked what he saw in Lindstrom and Owens and he made the deal.. and it could turn out to be a very solid deal.

 

People might be scared of the pen but there is some nice young talent in it (Pinto, Tank, Owens, Lindstrom, Mitre, Garcia) .. and hopefully one of Gregg, Koplove, FRod or Field step up during spring training. Will just be nice to get the roles sorted out.

Shouldn't take long for the Bullpen to get situated. Fredi will take most time in giving out the closer job to anyone

Well perhaps I was wrong about the general opinion here but I couldn't get the thread to open here. In any case I was very skeptical that his lack of genuine stuff was going to be sufficient in the majors, and I was hoping that a guy with more upside would take his rotation spot.

I'll admit I liked Vargas after 05, and I thought he would have a good year. And while I think he did have his moments early on in the season (thinking that game vs the Cubs on ESPN that the bullpen blew), the fact is he lost it at some point and never got it together again, and that opened the door to guys who looked better than he ever did. The guys we got in return for him are at least different from what we have had in the pen in their K/BB ratios. I am glad that these guys will be attacking the hitters, and at the very least, if they are getting on base, they are probably earning it. We should at least be walking fewer from the pen this season.
