April 4, 200718 yr Author Carpenter's sore elbow alters rotation By Joe Strauss ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH 04/04/2007 A bad Sunday night has become a bad week for Chris Carpenter. Still to be determined is whether it will extend to a bad month. The Cardinals' ace will miss at least his next scheduled start against the Houston Astros on Friday after notifying team trainers of elbow stiffness, soreness and swelling after Sunday's season-opening loss to the New York Mets. "I wish I could explain how or why, but I can't," Carpenter said. The club issued a five-sentence release Tuesday afternoon but added little more. The statement described skipping Carpenter as a "precaution" and said he would be re-evaluated over the next three days. "I certainly wouldn't call it a red flag," pitching coach Dave Duncan said. Though the club did not discuss the probability of Carpenter landing on the disabled list for a third time in four seasons, a club source said such a move becomes likely if there is no significant improvement in the next three days. The Cardinals declined to make medical supervisor Dr. George Paletta available for comment. "Any time something is going on with your arm, it's one: frustrating, two: a disappointment; and three: I don't know if it's alarming or not," Carpenter said about 90 minutes before Tuesday night's game against the Mets. "I want to make sure it's OK. That said, everyone I've talked to ? doctors and trainers ? is not alarmed. They don't think it's anything serious. They're trying to make sure that I know that everything will be OK." STLtoday - Sports - Cardinals
April 8, 200718 yr Author Breaking News: Strauss reports Carpenter scratched Joe Strauss is reporting that the Cardinals have scratched their ace righthander from Tuesday's start in Pittsburgh. Carpenter told Strauss that he was returning to St. Louis for an MRI examination of his ailing right elbow, but the Cardinals would not confirm that before the game. Carpenter had a long-toss session Friday with no problems, and followed that up by pitching off the mound on Saturday in a pregame bullpen session at Minute Maid Park. Carpenter threw all his pitches and at game-conditon velocity on Saturday, and expressed confidence that he'd be able to make his scheduled start in Pittsburgh. But Carpenter's elbow flared up overnight, and he expects that he'll undergo more thorough testing in an effort to determine the exact nature of the problem. It appears that rookie Blake Hawksworth will be called up from Class AAA Memphis to make the Tuesday start -- but nothing official on that. We will try to get Joe's story online ASAP, but I will also post it here in the forum and on Cards Talk. He is writing it now, which is why I am passing along the info. --B STLtoday.com: Sports - Forums - Cards Talk - Topic - Breaking News: Strauss reports Carpenter scratched
April 9, 200718 yr Author Bigs or AAA? 'Bird will know soon By Jim Masilak April 9, 2007 One way or another, today promises to be a landmark day in the life of Redbirds right-hander Blake Hawksworth. The 24-year-old will either make his Triple-A debut tonight at AutoZone Park against New Orleans or join the St. Louis Cardinals in Pittsburgh and make a spot start Hawksworth said of a possible big-league call-up. "If something like that came to happen, that's when I'd think about it. All I've been thinking about is that I'm getting ready for my first Triple-A start." In the meantime, a few feet down the hall in the Redbirds' clubhouse, Cardinals general manager Walt Jocketty met with the Memphis managerial staff to discuss the club's options. The North Vancouver, B.C., native is tentatively set to make his Memphis debut against the Zephyrs tonight on nine days' rest. Hawksworth hasn't pitched since March 30, when he threw five impressive and scoreless innings in an exhibition game against the Cardinals at AutoZone Park. [More in URL] Sounds like it'll be him. I've wanted to see him get a chance anyways, but not this way..
April 9, 200718 yr Author Keisler to start Tues., Carp likely to DL As usual, there will be more detail on all of this when my notebook goes up. But in the meantime, here are the morning updates from the pregame chat with TLR: * Randy Keisler will start in Carpenter's place on Tuesday. It would be his fifth day, after he went on Thursday in Memphis' opener. * The corresponding move likely will be to place Carpenter on the DL. He flew with the team out of Houston, then headed back to STL last night. He's being checked out by Paletta today. * Scott Spiezio is ill; he apparently has something resembling food poisoning. It's uncertain whether he'll come to the park or stay back at the hotel. -M. [Link]
