Dolphins to Daunte: Your Future is Not Here

Quarterback Daunte Culpepper is officially on the way out of the Dolphins' door.

On the morning after acquiring Chiefs quarterback Trent Green, Dolphins officials notified Culpepper they are ''going in a different direction'' and will attempt to trade him.

Coach Cam Cameron and general manager Randy Mueller met with Culpepper Wednesday morning to notify him of their plans. Still, Culpepper said Mueller and Cameron also advised him that he would not be cut -- and he would be kept on the roster throughout the off-season despite his inevitable departure.

'They would like to trade me in order to `get something for me,' '' Culpepper said in an e-mail to The Miami Herald on Wednesday morning. ``However, it is my position that I have already been down that road and I am not interested in being traded.

``They have told me throughout the off-season that I am under contract to the Dolphins. Therefore, it will be up to them to either keep me under contract or release me. In the meantime, I will continue to work out at the facility with the team and prepare myself for training camp, wherever it may be.''

The decision to trade Culpepper comes a day after the medical staff cleared him to participate in an off-season practice Wednesday and this weekend's minicamp. It also comes on the same day Green will arrive in South Florida.

I'm OK with the trade for Green, but is Cleo Lemon so critical that we can't see who of the two rundown QB's looks better in camp?

I mean, I hate to keep going back to it, but Dr. Andrews pronounced Daunte healthy yesterday...seems to really suck that we did all the work for another team to now benefit from, but then again, we are the Dolphins.

He'll never be truely healthy after the knee surgery.

True, especially that a big part of his game was his quickness, which will never be the same again. I just don't think Green is all that great, but regardless we can now be free to have a veteran QB this year while we work with Beck to see if he can be our QB of the future (and yes I'm aware of his age)

Dolphins | Team expected to make quick decision on Culpepper

Thu, 7 Jun 2007 09:41:35 -0700

ESPNews reports the Miami Dolphins will either release or trade QB Daunte Culpepper before the team's minicamp this weekend.

So if there are no takers, he may just get released tomorrow. I guess the reason why is if he shows up and gets hurt, the dolphins cant trade or release him.

I don't know how no one would want this guy. Even as a back-up. He's an above average QB. Someone out there can use him.

Well I think the interested teams realize that the dolphins will probably release him in the next 48 hours. I am sure there are several teams that will make him an offer by monday.

If a team wants him bad enough, they should fork over a 7th rounder. Otherwise, they're going to have to fight everyone else for him.

However if they traded for him, wouldnt they get his current salary as well?

Yeah, that's probably true. I guess no one's going to want him at that price.

He has essentially no trade value. A former running QB who missed 2 straight years with knee injuries and makes a pretty hefty salary? He'll have to be released and signed by someone.

I definitely see him doing well somewhere too, because that's the way things have gone for this team lately. I've never seen the whole deal with Green but I guess we'll start Beck in a year or two anyway so whatever.

If the dolphins fall out of contention by week 11, they would be better off sitting green and playing beck. That way beck get experience and the pick doesnt upgrade to a 4th rounder.

BTW did anyone catch the article where trent green said he plans on starting for four years!

Greg Bedard of the Palm Beach Post reports that Dolphins quarterback Daunte Culpepper has been escorted off of the practice field during a team minicamp by Stu Weinstein, the team's security chief. (We once hung out with Stu.)

Culpepper has been working out on the side. His sudden departure, with an escort, suggests that he either has been released or traded.

The other possibility is that the team has decided not to risk exposing Culpepper to injury, since if Culpepper were to suffer a serious injury the team would be on the hook for his full $5.5 million salary. Last year, the Titans locked quarterback Steve McNair out of the facility for that very reason.

Weeks later, McNair won a grievance regarding the matter. But, in the interim, the Titans didn't have to worry about Steve popping an Achilles' tendon. So it was in hindsight a smart move.

Stay tuned. Meanwhile, we encourage Dolphins fans (and non-Dolphins fans looking for an insomnia cure) to check out Bedard's live blog of the minicamp practice.
