Now that he is a FA, should we go after him? We get to keep our players that we offer earlier and get Ramirez. Loria said he'll welcome a 82% payroll increase. :shifty

yea, i say bring in ramirez as our 4th outfielder and a-rod and pujols as our 5th and 6th corner infielders. :whistle

The funniest part about these types of threads is the sarcasm and the bad jokes. I remember how no one thought we'd get Pudge or Delgado and we ended up signing them.

The real question that makes for intellectual discussion here is even if the marlins could afford him, should they sign Manny.

Id say no, we shouldnt. I also think people who are really expecting a big payroll jump to be full of wishful thinking in the first place.

Even if we could afford him, it makes no sense to sign an aging OF who plays bad defense and is subject to sudden mental expolsions.

the man is 37 and he wants 20 mil a year...ya...oooooookkkkkkkkk

First question: Why would a player that demands so much attention agree to go to the team that always is at dead last or next to dead last in attendance??? Because some talking heads said he would have okayed the trade last year after all was done and signed?? He also said he wanted to remain a Dodger for the rest of his career, after all was done and signed.

Second question: Why would we want an aging OFer that never was very good with his glove? It's not the direction the FO keeps saying they want to take the team.

In answer to the question: NO.

whew, for a second I thought this was another thread on a player way out of our price range

thanks, I agree! :thumbup

no. manny deserves to stay in LA, he's the biggest drama queen ever.

This sarcasm is getting really old really fast :thumbdown

i say hell ya! go after him get a 1-2 yr deal give time for michael stanton to perfect his skills! also when we pick him up trade away hermida, cody, or hammer to get some minor leaguers!!

No.

Yes we should if we had a 100 Million Dollar Payroll, but if he signed for like 5 Mil or less which is the least likliest thing in Baseball then we shouldnt sign him.

But its okay we have a pretty good young and Upcoming Outfield in Ross/Maybin/Hermida

im actually really in favor of this idea if it ever were to happen...if we could do a 1 or 2 year deal...in a heart beat...

This will never happen, I would like it too ... but it won't happen.

By the way, you guys need to stop making threads that you know the answer to.

I think there's zero chance it happens because I think he will cost too much.

But everyone who mocks the idea of it like Manny is garbage are just lying to themselves. You can look at how he turned around the Dodgers, or just look at his numbers. No less than a 388 OBP in the last decade. SLG around 600 all but 1 year this decade. I don't care how old he is, unless he goes blind or busts a hip, he is probably gonna keep putting up big numbers where ever he plays. It's not like he's some has-been, the guy OPSed 1031 this year. And for his age, how much time has he spent on the DL? Does anyone here seriously think that the runs he would give up on defense in LF would actually outweigh his production at the plate (and the amount to which he would improve the production of other hitters)?

It's fine to mock the idea for it not being realistic, but please don't give me this garbage about how we're trying to improve defense. Give me a choice between him and Tori Hunter to play LF and everyone would pick Manny. If the FO could bring him in at an acceptable cost they would do it in a heartbeat.

And for the record, I don't believe he will be a Dodger next year, let alone the rest of his career.

Manny is a monster and he will be a monster again next season. But we don't need him with what we've got and what he'll do to team payroll. With the Marlins budget constraints laid down by Loria, I'd rather see them spend some money picking up one power relief arm if they are going to spend money in FA.

Manny is going to provide an interesting situation in terms of his free agency. He is demanding a huge contract for several years.

The usual suspects are pretty much disinterested in signing him, meaning the yankees, bosox, and mets. So that leaves who in terms of the obvious possibilities. Well it leaves the dodgers of course, maybe even the phillies. But I won't be surprised if NO ONE gives him what he wants, especially b/c this is an offseason loaded with talent. So if he doesn't sign with the Dodgers, I do expect a dark horse to end up signing him. I don't meanthe marlins, but someone unexpected regardless.

I wouldn't count the Mets or Yankees out of anything when it comes to a huge bat like Manny.

Because they can afford him they may consider it. Although, the yankees seem to want to go younger, not older. And didn't Boras say that Manny wouldnt go to the yankees.

If Manny somehow signs up to play for the league minimum, then yes, it is very possible.

Pitching, AND defense, when making threads we need to take all this into account. Manny would have been good for the playoff push, but he would have been a summer rental as it has been specified before. If you actually think about it, 82% increase is enough only to sign our players going through arb, and maybe a couple of bullpen arms which we are filling with minor pickups like Nunez, and Meyer, which can only mean we are in the market for a hitter.
