Posted December 8, 200816 yr UPDATE 12:21 p.m.: OK, here is one little thing to start the day: The Marlins are looking for a catcher, and they still like Ronny Paulino. They like him all the more because he will make close to the minimum next season. Paulino, by the way, has been praised big-time by Rene Gayo in the past couple of weeks for tearing it up in the Dominican. ... Thing is, the teams that have approached the Pirates about Paulino just want them to give him up for nothing, because he spent half of 2008 in the minors. The Pirates, obviously, would like to get something and are not ruling out he could be Ryan Doumit's backup. http://community.post-gazette.com/blogs/pb...ings-day-1.aspx This was brought up before, and it seems the Marlins are thinking about it. ----- I suspect we'd need to trade someone in the Cruz, Badenhop, Trahern, Sinkbiel, or Wood family of prospects.
December 8, 200816 yr Eh, why not. He was pretty pathetic in limited ABs last season, but has shown the ability to hit LHP in his career.
December 8, 200816 yr I like the idea of bringing him in. Someone who clearly won't steal AB's from Baker, and could contribute a specific role.

I am all over this! I been following this guy since DWL started and Paulino has major upside. Beinfest GET IT DONE!
December 8, 200816 yr Would love to see the Marlins add Ronny Paulino. Thnking back to last season when the Marlins nearly acquired Manny Ramirez, the Marlins would have sent Jeremy Hermida to the Pirates. Wondering if the Pirates still would be interested in Hermida. If so, I would do a trade that would send Jeremy Hermida to the Pirates for C Ronny Paulino and RP John Grabow.

A backup catcher and a LOOGY a year away from free agency. AWESOME.

If your assessment of what we'd need to give up is right, then I would want them to jump all over this. If I'm not mistaken, Cruz and Badenhop are out of options, and at least one is a likely DFA. So, pick which one you value less (my guess is Badenhop), and move him. Paulino is reasonably young with a .915 OPS in 259 AB vs. LHP, so this looks like a no-brainer to me.

I would not send them Cruz or Sinkbeil. Maybe Andino and a Badenhop/Trahern or maybe Amezega. Either Amezega or Andino would battle for the SS position there.
December 8, 200816 yr no thanks, rather would bring in Pudge tbh. Pudge for $4mil vs Paulino for $400k......you think Pudge is worth additional salary over Paulino (who should just about be entering his prime) that amounts to about 10% of this team's total payroll? I can't find any feasibility in that. If anything, make this deal and save the cash for Cantu (unless of course J. Sanchez becomes available, then bye-bye Jorge-y boy.)
December 8, 200816 yr I like the idea of adding Pudge. But if Paulino is made available, would prefer to have him over Pudge. Pudge would be a nice addition for a year, but Paulino has great upside and can complement Baker. Would be a nice affordable catcher tandem.
December 8, 200816 yr no thanks, rather would bring in Pudge tbh. That's like saying no thanks to Sonnanstine because you would rather have Randy Johnson...well, if Randy Johnson cost 10 times more than Sonnanstine.

I don't disagree, but I'm not sure I have much confidence in a 37, going on 38, Pudge who's numbers have been in steep decline, either.
December 8, 200816 yr Do it. Paulino is young, crushes lefties, and won't be making Four Million a year.
December 8, 200816 yr Veteran Presence Myth? Don't get me wrong I would love Pudge but if we are able to acquire Paulino I would not give it a second though. The guy has great upside at low cost and long term.
December 8, 200816 yr When did veteran presence and being a "clubhouse guy" become more important than what a player does out on the field?
