Rice and Ricky are the new hall of famers

Source ESPN

On the outside looking in: Andre Dawson and Bert Blyleven

Ricky got 94% of the votes... I want to know what idiots didnt vote for him....

Jim Rice gets in but eh i dont really care.. If he got it Dawson should have got in...thats my opinion...

Mark McGuire acually lost 2 votes this year from last year...

Rice barely gets in, but gets in. I think Rice deserves it pre-steroid era he was a feared hitter and a good player.

some Rice vs other hall of famers numbers:

Runs batted in from 1975-1986 Rice knocked in more runs than anyone he had 1,276. While Mike Schmidt had 1,221 and 1,147 for Dave Winfield.

Most traditional statistics, batting average, homers, RBIs, slugging, and total bases, t Rice had 11 titles in those five categories, one more than Hall of Fame ex-teammate Carl Yastrzemski. But among the other names in Rice's vicinity are Mickey Mantle and Willie Mays with 13, Ralph Kiner with 12, and Harmon Killebrew with 10.

And Rice has more wins in those categories than Reggie Jackson, Frank Robinson, and Willie McCovey (8), George Brett and Duke Snider (7), Ernie Banks (6), Billy Williams (5), Roberto Clemente, Kirby Puckett, and Willie Stargell (4), Orlando Cepeda and Al Kaline (3), Eddie Murray and Dave Winfield (2), Cal Ripken (1), and Tony Perez (0).

I really want to know what those who voted against people like Ricky Henderson are thinking, I mean what are they trying to accomplish? You can't tell me they seriously believe people like Henderson don't deserve to be in the Hall of Fame.... pisses me off.

Rice's numbers compare to a lot of players not elected, namely Albert Belle, who like Rice wasn't a "friend" to reporters. I'm glad to see him in there and now hopefully it will be just one more year Hawk.

If ruth, mays, Cobb, DiMaggio didn't get every vote no one will.

Jim Rice is definitely a HOFer, it's about time he got in.

Dawson is borderline

67% of the voting tbh

One thing that shocks me is that Mark Grace, who had more hits in the 1990s than any other player, didn't even get enough votes to stay on for next year.

Now, finally, the new MLB Network has something to talk about while they wait for Spring Training. :D

Congrats to Ricky, btw. He was a shoo-in as much as any player from that era. I remember way back in the 1980s, back when Ricky used for play for a certain club that wears pinstripes, I was sitting in the bleacher section and Ricky was playing right in front of me in the outfield. Some drunk SOB started to yell verbal abuse, including racial epithets, at a young black kid. Then, he directed another barrage at Ricky. Ricky just turned around and waved his glove back at him, as if he's trying to be polite as possible.

Yes, that was my biggest memory about watching Henderson play. That and watching him run around the bases in a hit-and-run situation. I wish I had a better one to recall. :mis2

I saw this on the MLB Network about Jim Rice:

From 1975-1986 he was 1st in hits, 1st in RBI, 1st in Total Bases, 2st in SLG, and 3rd in HR.

That's a HOFer.

If ruth, mays, Cobb, DiMaggio didn't get every vote no one will.

Doesn't make it right. Those 28 guys who didn't vote for Rickey don't deserve to vote.

Congats to Jim Rice and Ricky Henderson

I've always wanted to see Ricky play everyone says he's the best leadoff man to ever play and he is a fast as they come.

Ricky redefined the position of leadoff hitter no one has done it better or even come close. I am very happy for Rice. I know many look at the numbers and say ho-hum however those of us who watched him play can witness truthfully that very few players in all of history are of the calibre of Jim Rice. This is one case where the numbers do not come close in serving him justice. Jim Rice was just a killer at the plate

I just heard a great Rickey story that I had never heard before on the MLB Network.

In 1987, Rickey got injured in July. That year, Harold Reynolds stole his 60th base on the last day of the season and won the Stolen Base title.

The next day, Reynolds' phone rings...

Rickey: "Hey Reynolds, this is Rickey."

Harold: "Hey Rickey, what's up?"

Rickey: "Reynolds, you should be ashamed of yourself. Rickey will have 60 at the break." *click*

Wow, there are so many of those that are truly hysterical.

I'm with MMP in that I didn't really get to watch him play much, and that sucks.

Oh I agree. But you really think they're gonna change. I think some of the writers just look at like if mays or ruth what ever great didn't get every vote them why the hell should this guy. I think some just do it out of spite too.

Congrats these guys deserve it.

Someone once timed it and tested it over and over... and at least at one point in his career, found it was actually impossible to conventionally catch Henderson stealing. (catcher throw from home to 2B).

  • 1 month later...

Anyone in the Orlando area this weekend Rickey is scheduled to be @ espn the weekend at Disney/Hollywood studios along with HOF'ers Eckersley and Palmer. As will Mrs. Matt Treanor!
